HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, DECEMBER 20, 2013 PAGE 7A OB -L AR ES JACK S. WIESENFELD Jack S., Wiesenfeld of Tam- pa died Monday, Dec. 9, 2013. He was 87 years old. Mr. Wi- esenfeld was born in Boston, grew up in Brooklyn, N.Y., and came to Tampa 10 years ago after living in Maitland since 1969. Mr. Wiesenfeld was a U.S. Navy veteran having served proudly in the Pacific during WWII. He was a volunteer with many organizations including the usa, Faith Caf, the Chesed Shel Emes, tutored students in reading, and through Sar-El he volun- teered each year for 12 years to serve in the Israeli Army. In the June 28, 2013 issue of the Heritage, GloriaYousha printed a letter he wrote to the community in her column, Scene Around, in which he encouraged his friends here in Central Florida to volunteer in the IDF program he was involved in. He wrote: "I am about to embark on my 12th annual trip to Israel to volunteer with the IDF (Israel Defense Forces) pro- gram. The program used to be called Sar-El, which stood for Volunteers for Israel, but now is called IDF. I will eat and sleep at an Army base and will not know which one, until I arrive in Israel. I will not be asked to do anything that is too dif- ficult, too dangerous nor will I be asked to lift anything too heavy. Regardless of the job I am asked to do, my being there will replace a soldier. I will work a normal four and a half day veek and then will be able to,go off base and go anywheren Israel on my own and pay my own expense. There are a few hostels for the Army personnel and we are able to stay at them at no charge. I look forward to the people that I will meet.., not necessarily Jewish. They are people of all ages, from all over the world. Speaking of age, I will be 88 years old in December and I have never been asked to do a task that I could not handle. Israel and its growth never cease to amaze me, and how difficult it is to recognize places that I had been before. One of the benefits of vol- unteering is the friendships we make. I look forward to seeing a friend of mine from Holland. We keep in touch andwe call each other once or twice a month. I look forward to my trip each year and plan it when school is out, because I still volunteer in school. After all these visits to Israel, I am still only a private in the IDF. I would like to encourage The history of the Jews during the Civil War Congregation Beth Israel of Ocala invites the community to a special program titled "Jews in the Civil War" to be held on Sunday, Jan. 12, 2014, at 3 p.m. at the First Congregational Church, 7171 SR 200 in Ocala. He then encouraged folks to call him personally with any questions, and if he didn't answer, "it is because I may be in Israel." "MARTY" WOLKIND Martha (Gigi) Wolkind passed away peacefully on Saturday, Nov. 30, 2013, at Orlando Regional Medical Center, with her daughter by her side. She was 97 years old. Mrs. Wolkind was born in the Lower East Side of New York City on Oct. 2, 1916, the daughter of the late Isadore and Freida Kessler Jacobs. Her love of reading and theatre was passed on to her three daughters, grandchildrenand great-grandchildren. She kept up with all that was going on in the world and voiced her political opinions to anyone who would listen. She was a woman of strength, character and grace and her smile will be sorely missed.
