HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, DECEMBER 18, 2009 PAGE 9A By Gloria Yousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 Remember Pearl Harbor?... December 7 was the day that "went down in infamy" according to then President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. Yes, I do remember it but I was very, very (very) young. It brought to mind the war and the atom bombs that we launched against Japan to end it. This piece in turn brought that to mind. Here is aportion of a report from the Internet by the Associated Press: The world's largest atom smasher has recorded its first high-energy collisions of protons, a spokeswoman said Wednesday [Dec. 9]. Physicists hope those colli- President Franklin Delano Roosevelt sions will help them understand suspected phenomena such as dark matter, antimatter and ultimately the creation of the universe billions of years ago, which many theorize occurred as a massive explosion known as the Big Bang. The collisions occurred Tuesday [Dec. 8] evening as the Large Haldron Collider underwent test runs in preparation for operations next year, said Christine Sutton of the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN. Two beams of circulating particles traveling in opposite directions at 1.18 trillion electron volts produced the collisions, she said. The Atlas "experiment," one of four major detectors in cathedral-sized rooms in the collider's underground tun- nel at Geneva, had part of its equipment turned on and could register collisions." (I don't understand a word of it...but my spouse does and probably many of you will too.) Jared Kushner and lvanka Trump Kushner I don't know about you... But I need a joke about now. Sarah is talking about her grandfather. "He came to this country almost a century ago with absolutely no money.., and he knew only three words of English," she boasted. "And today he is a multi-millionaire." What were the three words, I asked? "Stick 'em up," she replied. (OK, that makes sense.) So, nu? What's with the Jewish husbands?... First it was IVANKA TRUMP who announced her marriage to a very orthodox man, JARED KUSHNER. Ivanka even converted to Judaism. Now, we have CHELSEA CLINTON,who recently announced her engagement to MARC MEZVINSKY. What a family she is marrying into. Her future promises to be a lot more "colorful" than just being the daughter of a former U.S. President and current U.S. Secretary of State. (That might be an understatement! Still, I say "mazel tov" to both young ladies.) And speaking of ladies... NOT YOUNG, mind you...not even ladies. Oy vay! The recent show for the Congregation Ohev Shalom Seniors was anything but dull when "Mr." KENNYLEE visitedwith his entertainers. I'm always impressedwith the talent, but especially those costumes... they were to die for! And speaking of talent... There will be evenings of improvisational comedy Dec. 20, 27 and Jan. 3 at 6 p.m. at Orlando's Parliament House Resort, 410 N. Orange Blossom Trail. Featured will be comics LAYDEN SADECKY, MARK LAINER, MATT HOROHOE, KRIST MILLER and MARY THOMPSON. Our own CAROL STEIN will be at the piano. Tickets will be $15 per per- Carol Stein son, but if you bring a Toy for a Tot it will be $10. You can go online to purchase at (I really need a good laugh. I plan to be there for at least one of the events.) You can be Jewish... And still enjoy a reading of Charles Dickens "A Christmas Carol." Robin Olson's classic holiday retelling of this famous story will be celebrated as RSC Productions in association with DiDonna Productions presents Dickens By Candlelight, one of Central Florida's most celebrated and longest running holiday traditions. It has been performed since 1997 at avariety of locations around Central Florida. Seating is limited as there will be only five performances in 2009. It started Dec.16 but will go through Sunday, Dec. 20, at 8 p.m. at the Dr. Phillips Patrons Room, John and Rita Lowndes Shakespeare Center, Loch Haven Park. Tickets are $25; students and seniors, $15. To RSVP, phone 407-328-9005. Reading is always great... It opens up all kinds of worlds and experiences. On Saturday, Dec. 19 (tomorrow) at noon to 3 p.m., JIM ROBINSON and BILL BELLEVILLE will autograph their new book, "Images of America: Along The Wekiva." Meandering through Orange, Lake and Seminole Counties, this "purest form of Central Florida nature," as described by one of its champions, is also bordered by some of the region's most densely populated suburban sprawl. The Wekiva River makes up some of the best protected waters in the state with laws designed for its preservation, as it is recognized as a re- gional "jewel" and a resource worth saving in public trust as parks, preserves and forests. Its cooling springs have provided recreation for generation after generation. "Images of America: Along the Wekiva" is a collaboration of Central Florida historian Jim Robison and creative nonfiction writer and filmmaker Bill Belleville to carry on the mission of the Friends of the Wekiva River, Inc. FOWR, a nonprofit organization, has championed the pro- tection of the Wekiva since the early 1980s and shares in the royalties and other benefits from book sales. Presenting 200 images of people, artifacts, and places by the river system, Along the Wekiva River brings history to life and chronicles major events in the river's heritage. This booksigning takes place at Urban Think!Bookstore, 625 E. C 'ntral Blvd, Orlando. Telephone: 407-650-8004. One for the road... The night before their wedding, AIf and Bette were sharing confidences. Alf said, "You must know something before we get married. I am a fanatic golfer. I eat, sleep and drink golf. Golf is my whole life. After we are married, I'll try for some balance, but I doubt whether I'll succeed. Just understand you're marrying a golf addict." "I can live with that," said Bette, "now I'll tell you my secret--I'm a hooker." "A hooker?" Alf repeated. "I can live with that. Next time, keep your head down and your left arm straight, then swing through the ball...." (Considering all the Tiger Woods stuff in the media, I thought I would revive this joke.)
