HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, DECEMBER 10, 2010 By Gloria Yousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 One day too late ... But there is always next year. Here is a neat Chanukah poem: "Tvas the night before Chanukah, Oy! What a shock! Somebody outside was picking our lock! And there at the door stood a zayda in blue ... And he wore on his kupp a blue yarmulke too! His punimwas shain, every- body would love it! Round his neck hung a chain with a gold Mogen David! He wore silken tsitzes beneath his wool vest, and a small flag of Israel was draped on his chest! He said 'I'm no burglar so Helen Tishman please don't be nervous. I'm the spirit of Chanukah here at your service. Menchen all call me Reb Shalom Shapiro. Without me this yam tov might need a new hero. I visit all Yidlach and bring kinnahorra, good fortune as bright as a glowing menorah. Ich shlepp lots of blessings and Chanukah gelt and joys that are takka the best in der velt! If you know nice menchen I'll vist them quick, and I'll bring them gezunt and a houseful of glick!' So we sent him to your house and shook hands and parted. He shouted 'Shalom' out the doorway he darted! He ran to a wagon with horses ahead. He fed them some bagels ... and here's what he said: 'Let's go, Moish and Mendel. Make quick, Moe and Yossle. Please give a rush, Malkah. Hey Hymie, please hustle.' Then they raced like the wind and they galloped so schnell all his clothing blew off and his gatkes as well! Soon he was so kalt that his tushie turned bluish. He moaned and he hollered in English and Jewish. So don't act embarrassed and please don't be rude when that frostbitten zayda arrives in the nude. Quick! Wrap him in blankets. Don't beat 'round the bush ... and tie a hot water bag on his cold tush! Quick, feed him some chicken soup heiss as can be, and give him some shnapps and a glez'l hot tea. Cause he brings you a houseful of Chanukah wishes as warm and geshmock as a plate of hotknishes. And he brings them from our house so friendly and bright, so our house will keep glowing with Chanukah light. Plus joy sweet as tsukker, and peace and good cheer, and everything fraylach each day of the year. And none in your family will be a schlimazel, for life will bring each of you simchas and mazel! And all through the future your hopes will come true And Himmel will bless your mishpocha and you! Speaking of poems ... I received this e-mail from NANCY LUDIN of tlae Jewish Pavilion: "Our oldest volunteer is Helen Tishman. She is turning 90 this month. She lives at Chambrel at Island Lake in Longwood in as- sisted living. Helen welcomes all newcomers to the facility and helps lead services. She also assists with phone calls thanking new members of the Jewish Pavilion. In one word, Helen is amazing! Please include her poem and photo in your next column." (I am happy to do so. Helen is a very Special lady.) THE JEWISH PAVILION Poem By Helen Tishman The Jewish Pavilion is a blessing in disguise For Jews who live away from home it surely is a prize. It keeps the taste of Judaism turning bright and true. They do the job so well, you know, they really, really do. Bringing festival joys of tasty foods like Mother used to make, Like noodle kugel, hamantasch and matzoh to partake. A Sabbath service every week is sure to make you smile. They do it all so well, you see, and they do it all in style. Their volunteers who visit those who need a cheerful word Are part of the huge effort to let loneliness be heard. Donations make it possible to continue in their work. So help them to continue with every type of perk By giving all you can With time and whatever else it takes. It's a mitzvah you'll be doing for our Jewish peoples sakes. (Helen has a way with words. I wonder if she's writ- ten lyrics?) Passionate is the word ... I received "Passionate About Their Work," a book by three-time published author, LESLIE C. HALPERN. I know I've written about this book before Iut now that I've read it I realize there are Leslie Halpern many folks I know in the book ... including me! (I'm on page 63.) Leslie writes about super- stars in many fields ... true celebrities that are known worldwide. She also writes about local celebrities, some of whom are known to me and some who areeven connected to our Jewish community. For instance: ALAN BER- LINER, filmmaker, the cousin of EDWARD and LISETTE HALPERN, is featured on pages six, 46 and 95 (maybe on other pages. I'm not sure.) Alan has been to Central Florida many times and has Oprah Winfrey had his wonderful work shown at the well-known Enzian Theater in Maitland. BEN ROCK, the son of our own ALAN ROCK and the late Vicki Rock, is featured on pages 23 and 92. Ben is a highly respected producer, director, etc. JEFF MANDELL, an accomplished digital artist, caricaturist and illustrator, is featured on pages 80 and 120. VICKI ROUSSMAN, owner of VIR Productions, a producer and wonderful comedy instructor is featured on pages 93-94. JUDITH SEGALL, a Judaic artist, papermaker and mixed- media artist is featured on page 86. JUDITH RUBINGER, a children's author, an actor and direc- tor, is on pages 81-82. Those are just a few of the ones I recognized as locals or being connected to locals. Of course there are many extremely famous folks like DENNIS HOPPER, PETER FALK, PHYLLIS DILLER, BOB NEWHART, DAVID BRENNER, OPRAH WINFREY, REGIS PHILBIN, ROD STEIGER, ANGELA LANSBURY, TED KOPPEL, FRANCIS FORD COPPOLA and many, many more. Howdid Leslie get to all these folks? . There are also photographs of celebrities with Leslie in the book. I recommend it to all aspiring young folks who want to pick up some valuable information on how to get started. As the book "Passionate About Their Work" says "Creativity, Quotes and Anecdotes To Inspire Your Life." You can purchase this book by going online to BearManor, or to the author's own website: home. Leslie is a former editor of Heritage Florida Jewish News. One for the road ... Morris and Ruth have just celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. That night, as they are getting ready for bed, Morris looks carefully at Ruth. "What are you staring at?" Ruth asks. "Darling," he replies, "I've been thinking. When We got mar- ried 25 years ago, we lived in a small apartment, we drove a cheap Ford car, we watched TV on a small 15-inch black and white television, and we couldn't afford a proper bed so we had to make do with a sofa bed. However, despite all of that, I was proud to be sleeping with a sizzling 25-year-old blonde. Now, however, we have a large house in the Hamptons, we drive a Lexus, we have a 42-inch Sony LCD television set with Sky digital and we have a king-sized war bed. "But here's my problem: I'm now sleeping with a 50-year-old woman. You're obviously not holding up your side of things, and I don't know what to do." Ruth, being avery reasonable and sensible lady, says to Morris, "I've got a solution to your problem, Morris. Go out and find a sizzling 25-year-old blonde. When you find one, I'll make sure that you'll once again be living in a small apartment, driving a cheap Ford, sleeping on a sofa bed and watching a 15-inch black.and white television set." (Right on, Ruth!) Every day that you're outside, you're exposed to dangerous, but invisible, ultraviolet (UV) sunlight. Left unprotected, prolonged exposure to UV radiation can seriously damage the eye, beading to cataracts, skin cancer around the eyelid arid other eye disorders. Protecting your eyes is im'portant to maintaining eye heo4th now and in the future. Shiel d your eyes (and your family's eyes) from harmful UV rays. Wear sunglasses with maximum UV protection. l THEVISIONCONC L HERITAGEI FLORIDAIJEWISH. NEWS | can be purchased at the following locations: ORANGE COUNTY JCC, 851-N.
