During a question-and- answer period with the audience, discussion ranged from the power of God to the power of jihad. As this second generation grew to adulthood, the Holocaust meant something different to them: quoting Helen Ep- stein, author of "Children of the Holocaust," remember- ing was not an issue, in that they were "guardians of a unique and volatile legacy." Referencing Art Spiegel- man's "Maus." and books by Thane Rosenbaum. as well as the film "Weapons of the Spirit" by Pierre Sauvage, Berger reflected on the special duty and special burdens of these young adults. As he pointed out, to be born from parents who have seen their first children murdered creates very dif- ficult circumstances in some ways a sibling rivalry with ghosts. "With Menorah we got a bunch of anti-Semitic reviews, because you used to be able to review without owning the app, so people would put up anything," he said. "But Apple removed them within a month." Schwartz grew up Or- thodox and is well versed in the halachah of the iPhone. RustyBrick has received requests to create apps such as a machzor and zemirot, which would only be useful on Shabbat or yam tov (when the use of devices such as an iPhone is prohibited), but Schwartz refuses. "Our rabbis won't let us," he said. When it comes to Meno- rah, though, things get a bit hazy. "Halachically the re- quirement [for lighting Chanukah candles] is oil." Schwartz said. "The rabbis said, 'OK, anything that's physical light' after that it's questionable if you're allowed to use electric ones with filament bulbs. "Bottom line, though, the mitzvah is not necessarily the lighting of it it's to spread the miracle," he noted. "If you open this app and show it to someone else, that's the mitzvah right there. If you have nothing else, it's better than noth- ing." Reprinted with permis- sion from j. the Jewish news weekly of Northern California, www.jewishsf. com.
