HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, DECEMBER 4, 2009 Celebrate with Rebecca, the new American Girl doll Years after the American Girl doll series debuted, Re- becca Rubin, the first Jewish doll in the collection, is here. Rebecca's story takes place in 1914, in an immigrant com- munity in New York, and her life reflects the real stories of young Jewish girls of the time. Pleasant Company, maker of the American Girl dolls, offers the Rebecca doll, books, and accessories, through their Web site at www.', and in retail stores. "Candlelight for Rebecca," one of the books in the series, tells of Rebecca's "December Dilemma" when the students in her class are asked to make Christmas decorations. Rebecca knows she's just as American as her classmates, and teaches them a lesson about Chanukah. Haley Gaeser is the Heri- tage's guest reviewer for the Rebecca doll. At 12, Haley isn't of doll-playing age any longer, but she appreciates the beauty and the history of Rebecca, and recommends her for young girls and col- lectors alike. Here are Haley's thoughts about Rebecca: "Did eqeryone hear the news? The new American Girl doll has finally arrived, and guess what? Her name is Rebecca, and she's Jewish! Can you believe it? After so many of them, they finally came out with one that's Jew- ish. I recently got one and it's beautiful. It has amazingly Haley Gaeser with Rebecca, the newest American Girl doU. pretty features and will make any girl happy. Now, I know that the economy is not very good right now, and times are tough, but this doll isn't that much compared to others. "If you buy Rebecca with the paperback book, it costs around $96. It might sound like a lot, but if you were to get all of the other accessories as well, you would spend hun- dreds more. The doll should not be played with roughly. It can be breakable. If this does happen, then you can take it to the American Gift doll hospital and they'll fix it up for you. Keep it out of range of kids 5 and under. "I hope you have fun with your Rebecca doll."
