HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, OCTOBER 28, 2011 ......... . By Gloria Yousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 L-R:Little Hannah and her dad, Capt.James Mackler I write far in advance... It is obvious that I write far in advance when you read about Sgt. 1st Class GILAD SHALIT of the Israeli military in my column last week. By the time the newspaper was published and in your home, Shalit was already free. In photographs he looks like he lost a lot of weight, though, but thank goodness he is still with us. (I have to lose weight.., but there must be an easier way. I know! I know! Air-brushing!) More about "far in advance..." What's this? It is early morning, Thursday, Oct. 20. Over my television news program I hear that Moammar Gadhafi is dead! But, it is not confirmed by our White House yet. Could it be? By the time you read this column, you will know for sure. (See what I mean when I say that I write far in advance of publication?) Meet an Israeli hero... YOSSI COHEN has lived in Sderot, Israel, for nearly his entire life, and it seems everyone in the city knows him. For over 33 years he has been working with Magen David Adom where today he is an ambulance driver and senior paramedic. Yet, as much as Yossi loves his town and its people, the pain of the last eight years of rocket fire from the Gaza Strip is clear in his eyes and his speech. The most pain- ful story he has to tell occurred a few years ago, when he arrived at the scene of a Qassam rocket strike, only to find his daughter, son-in-law and his young grandson lying on the ground seriously injured. "That day and all its trauma will always live with me," Yossie says. "Now my grandson is handicapped and all of this because of a Qassam rocket. I'll never have the happiness for life that I once had." For Yossi, the Magen David Adorn station is truly his second home. He is a role model and friend to all the young volunteers who dedicate their time to the MDA Sderot station. When it comes to serving the community of Sderot, his spirit clearly can't be defeated. After every rocket, Yossi immediately heads for the ambulance and out into the field to check for any injuries. (Without a doubt, Yossi Cohen is a hero!) What a lovely photograph... We at Heritage Florida Jewish News received this email from SAMMY GOLDSTEIN of Beth Shalom. He recently wrote: "The picture with the two people is of my son-in-law Capt. JAMES MACKLER and my granddaughter, HAN- NAH. It was taken at Tashlich at The Temple in Nashville where my daughter, SHANA, is one of the rabbis. It was taken by one of Shana's congregants, YUDA PAP, who is a professional photographer." (See the lovely photo above.) An Israeli TV personality... Rabbi JEREMY GIMPEL, co-founder of the most popular English language TV broadcast in Israel, "Tuesday Night Live in Jerusalem," will be visiting Orlando! Gimpel will be speaking on Monday, Nov. 14 at the Casseiberry Woman's Club from 6:30 p.m.-9 p.m. The location is 251 Overbrook Drive in Casselberry. Gimpel made aliyah to Israel several years ago. He will be speaking about the beauty, innovation, spirituality and wonders of Israel. This is a fundraiser to continue support for his TV show so that all may see the positive aspects of Israel. Everyone is welcome to attend. Light refreshments will be served. Admission is $25, which is tax deduct- ible. For more information, call SANDI SOLOMON at407-831-0176 Or go on- line to sansolomon@hot- Oy, what a showL.. Singing, music, eating... (especially eating!) I'm referring to the next Congregation Ohev Shalom Seniors' meeting on Sun- day, Nov. 6. The meeting begins at 2 Rabbi Jeremy Gimpel p.m. sharp and is followed by some terrific entertain- ment.., that is... if you like jazz. Fabulous clarinetist SYL LAFATA not only looks like Benny Goodman, he sounds like Benny Goodman! The super-talented clarinet player has worked all over the world and especially on the riverboats of New Orleans with famous musicians. On bass, the great RIC RICHOLSON, will bring his special talents to COS. He is especially wonderful on his instrument, bringing the jazz beat alive. On the keys, we have one of the best pianists in our area, HOWARD HERMAN. Howard has played with the best and recently ended a multi-year stint at Orlando's prestigious Citrus Club. On vocals is someone who has worked occasionally with these guys and also sang for seven years at the Citrus Club. She is the former singer with the legendary Jimmy Dorsey Orchestra. Maybe a little (a lot) overweight and a little ancient, but she can still swing. (I'm talking about me!) I'm just back from my Manhattan cabaret gig and will do my show "Gershwin And All That Jazz" for the COS members and everyone who attends. There are no reservations required. Everyone is welcome to attend. And perhaps the best part of the afternoon...refreshments will be served! (It's always food with me. But wait! I can't eat before I sing. I hope food is left over.) The cost for all this mishagas is only $3 for COS Senior members and $6 for all others. For further information, phone BERNY RAFF at 407- 657-8215. What keeps me young, you ask? Shut up! Actually, what helps me feel young (never mind the looking young) is my wonderful Avon lady, SANDRA (SAM) JULEFF. Just when I didn't feel appreciated she told me she thinks, "I am the most fascinating person she ever met." She also wished me "many more years of doing what I do." Can you imagine a 90-year-old vocalist? Don't even try. You'll get nightmares! (You can contact her through me.) One for the road... This is a mean joke but I couldn't resist telling it. Question: Why are single Jewish women skinnier than married Jewish women? Answer: Single women go to the fridge, see nothing nice and then go to bed. Married women go to bed, see nothing nice and then go to the fridge. (Don't let my spouse see this column, please!) Mike & Sarah Sokol - Owners Join your Florida friends at ...
