There are parades and awards. Puppies are evaluated and older Great Danes honored. Tuesday Oct.21 is a particularly fun day, as the Great Danes compete in agility and obedience. The events begin at 7:30 a.m. and will run all day. Agility is a fun competitive performance dog sport. The dogs may be asked to jump hurdles, run through a pipe tunnel, go over a see-saw by running up one end to the middle, making the board tilt down, then running down and off, and finish by going through a tire jump. Other obstacles include the A-frame (9 foot tall boards attached in a peak - the dog must climb up, over and down), the dog walk (12 foot ramp leading to a 12 foot plank four feet in the air, with a 12 foot ramp down - with all boards merely 12 inches wide) and the pause table (36 inch square table on which the dog must stay for a count of five). (My little Muffin is agility trained. She weighs about nine pounds but to see these super-large dogs go through the paces is breathtaking, to say the least.) In obedience, the dogs must respond promptly and courte- ously to a series of commands such as sit, stay, heel, or jump over an obstacle to retrieve. One of our local Great Danes, ABW Classic OPTIMUS PRIME (O.P. to his friends) is entered in the obedience competition with his human companion, MERRELL BAILEY, of Orlando. I am proud to be one of O.P.'s friends. See "Scen, Around" on 20 can be purchased at the following locations: On cE COUNTY JCC .Cascades Florist 851 N.
