HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, OCTOBER 10, 2003 PAGE 7 Heavenly Blessings On his return from business in Hung Kong, Brooklynite Larry Spiewak was sitting in first class on Cathay Pacific .Airlines, when a flight attendant asked him to join several Jews m coach for a prayer service. He joined a minyan led by Rabbi Joshua Metzger, head of Chabad of Midtown Manhattan. After the mincha (afternoon) service, the rabbi invited Larry to sheva brachot on the plane for his newly married brother Shmuel and bride Raizie. "How are we going to have a meal here?" Larry asked. The rabbi opened his carry-on and took out 15 sandwiches which his mother had packed for the trip. After an hour of singing and bensching, everybody went back to napping. Shanah Tovah from Italy Acknowledging the persistent "buzz" about the Anti-Defa- mation League dinner at New York's Plaza Hotel honoring controversial Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, national director Abraham Foxman deflected persistent criticism by Praising Berlusconi as a staunch friend of the United States and Israel. "You see anti-Zionism and anti-Israel for what it is--anti- Semitism," Foxman said. "You visited the Rome synagogue last eek. Your government made clear that Hamas equals terror- tsm. You've shown more understanding and support for Israel than any other country in Europe." For those reasons Foxman bestowed the ADL's Distinguished Statesman Award on Berlusconi. Foxman said he asked Berlusconi why did he break from his EUropean colleagues to support the U.S. in Iraq. Berlusconi told him that he visits Anzio Beach once a year. He looks at the rows of crosses and Stars of David and recalls how they came across the ocean and laid down their lives so the People of Europe can live in freedom. "I have always been grateful to America," Berlusconi said at dinner, "for saving my country from the scourges of Nazism, ism, Communism and the Soviet empire. "We are proud to be the most loyal allies of the United States in Afghanistan and Iraq." The Italian prime minister, who hasvisited Israel twice in the last three years, affirmed his country s stand with the U.S. to ,ga)Sure Israel's '!integrity within secure andsafe borders." He proposed several steps toward peace in the Middle East: Israel should become a member of the European Union. The EU should develop an economic development plan for the Middle East. Sicily would host Israeli/Palestinian peace talks. He added: "As prime minister of Italy and president of the By Michael Gamson European Union, I pledge my commitment to fight anti- Semitism. That's why I support the mission of the ADL. Shanah Tovah." Jubilee Fulfills Prophecy Fifty years ago gorgeous Lee came home to Borough Park, Brooklyn, and announced, "I just met the most handsome man in Manhattan - he looks just like Clark Gable." (Translation: he's not Orthodox.) Her father, Benzion Blech, a chasidishe rabbi not known for his familiarity with Hollywood, bellowed, "Let him be gone with the wind!" Undaunted, the handsome young lawyer came around to ask for the hand of his daughter. The Chasidishe rabbi gave Harry First the once-over and pronounced, "Not in ayoivel" - not in 50 years! Undeterred, Harry and Lee went off hand in hand. When the elder Blech was finally reconciled to their marriage he declared a holiday - Tisha b'Av. As if to fulfill the rabbi's prophecy, Judge Lee First and her Harry, having completed 50 years of matrimony, marked their jubilee last month under the chupah where they renewed their VOWS. That, said Lee's brother, Rabbi Benjamin Biech, makes them candidates for a reality show such as "The Survivors." Rabbi Blech, a Talmud scholar at Yeshiva University, re- united the couple with a blessing for another 50 years, along with a warning: "Like the philosopher once said, those who forget history are condemned to repeat it." Quoting another philosopher (probably Henny Youngman), Blech compared marriage to a three-ring circus: First comes the engagement ring, then the wedding ring followed by the suffering. The couple's marriage, Blech noted, lasted halfa century and beyond even though they have a few petty differences. For instance, Lee is sane, Harry is crazy. "But is there anyone here who is married to someone who is totally sane? Let's have a show of hands." Not one person raised a hand. Blech revealed that his father attached so much importance to the wedding that he often said, "The Moshiach will come before I'll let her marry Harry." It turned out that Harry, who never knew the meaning of tzedakah before he met Lee, is today the biggest supporter of Lubavitch in Israel. Hard to Reach On a recent visit to New York from his headquarters in Israel, EL AL president Amos Shapira said the airline is so focused on being passenger-friendly that it has created a new office--vice president for service. He promised that the company would not compromise in serving its customers, whether in the area of safety and security, speedy check in or on-time flights. "In fact," he said,"the only one who could cancel a flight is the ceo-Ta, nd I'm very hard to reach." Security, he said, is the best in the industry. He said his son was released from the army last year and took time otto tour South America. "The best place I wanted him to be is on an EL AL plane, Shapira said. In"Politics", I found a head- line about the forming of a shnurers' union. In the Sports section, I read about the infa- mitted photographs from parties of the 60's, 70's, and 80's. The kitsch factor can- not be overestimated here. Visitors will see photos of some of the most outrageous theme parties imaginable.
