PAGE 4A By Ira Sharkansky Not all the religious fanatics are Muslims. One can think of candidates under the umbrella of Christianity, but here our concern is Jews. Two cases recently in the headlines provoke shame or something else, depending on one's sense of responsibility or cynicism. One is a bearded, well-coiffured man whose trial on sexual exploitation and slavery ended after four years of delays. There were guilty verdicts for rape and other varieties of sexual exploitation involving several wives and lots of children, but the court could not find sufficient evidence of slavery. The verdict did not pass without criticism. The slavery claimed was not chains and whipping, but emotional bond- age or extreme dependence by a man who claimed religious authority. Another case has produced police inves- tigations and arrests, but may be months or years short of a trial and verdict. It involves a charismatic who persuaded his female acolytes that having sex with Arabs (who would pay him for their services) would advance their status as Jews and bring forward God's promise of salvation. We don't know how many other charis- matic Jews are somewhere under the rocks, employing one or another of the elements that imaginative creators have produced un.der the heading of Judaism over the course of perhaps 2,500 years. There was a group of women who dressed in layers of covering, dubbed by the media "Tali- ban women," led by a man claiming the title of rabbi who preached the severe discipline of children, then fled to South America to avoid charges of abuse. Psychologists have pondered the weak- nesses that make individuals vulnerable to such leadership. Among the findings are a lack of education, backgrounds of abuse, new converts or newly religious Jews. Yet some of the victims have been well-educated and have made impressive appearances in the media. Beyond extremist sects, there are many more Jews whose beliefs and practices range close to or across the borders of what the rest of us consider conventional. We can argue about the rankings of what is more or less conventional, and in whose eyes. Wake up call Part I By Ed Ziegler It cannot be denied or ignored any longer. Islamic terrorists such as ISIS, Boka Harram, Hamas, etc., have declared war on all infidels (non-Muslims) worldwide. I pray that every American man, woman and child finally accept the fact that there are millions of Muslims dedicated to eliminating freedom and taking over the world in the name of Allah. This article presents the preaching of Islamic leaders and actions of their fanatic followers. They make their fanatic obsession very clear. One world. One religion, ruled by Islamic law. My question to you: How many times must you hear their own words before:you realize that hoards of barbaric fanatic Muslims will joyously slaughter you and your family? According to Army Col. Kenneth King, the commanding officer of Camp Bucca, when Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi, now leader of ISIS, an extremely brutal Islamic terrorist group, was released from the U.S. detention camp in 2009, he uttered the chilling comment "I'll see you guys in New York." The fanatic Pakistani cleric, Qari Hitzur, told The Sun of his chilling dream to turn the world Muslim by force if necessary. He spoke openly of imposing Islamic Jaw's stoning and beheading in Britain. He said "We want Islamic law for all Pakistan and then the world. "We would like to do this by preaching. But if not then we would use force." In August 2013, Australian Muslim Cleric, Sheikh Sharif Hussein, posted a video saying "Oh Allah, count the Buddhists and the Hindus one by one. Oh Allah, count them and kill them to the very last one." In 2013, The Daily Post reported that 27-year-old terrorist, Nasir Isiaku, said "If we ask our victim, 'Will you become a Muslim or not and he or she refuses, we will slaughter him like a goat..." He talked of himself as an Islamic warrior who takes delight in chopping off people's heads with a stroke of his dagger. He decimated hundreds of Christians for refusing to accept Islam. rhe Times of Israel reported that Imam Isnat A1-Hammouri called for the destruc- tim of America, France, Britain, and Rome, during a prayer gathering marking the start of Ramadan. Hundreds of worshippers at Jeru- salem's mosque responded with cries of "Allah Akbar" (God is Great). He also said "Who do you think we are, America? We are the nation of Islam--a giant and mighty nation. Soon, we will teach you a political and military lesson." Sheik Ibrahim Muderis, in Gaza, said, "We have ruled the world before, and by Allah, the day will come when we will rule the entire world again. The day will come when we will rule America." Sheikh Omar Bakri Mohammed, Syrian- born British Muslim cleric, proudly stated, "We don't make a distinction between civilians and non-civilians... Only between Muslims and unbelievers. And the life of an unbeliever has no value." Abu Bakr, Australian Muslim Cleric "I am telling you that my religion doesn't tolerate other religions. The only one law which needs to spread, it can be here or anywhere else, has to be Islam." Egyptian Cleric, Wagdi Ghneim, on Hamas' Al-Aqsa TV: 'We pray to Allah that we be ter- rorists. If terror means Jihad and we are a nation that excels in the production of the art of death." Listen to their words. They are serious, take them seriously. The lives of our families are at stake for they are proving they intend to take them. Wake UP to the facts and get involved. Continuously demand that our representatives take action. Somewhat less extreme are those ultra- Orthodox who ignore Israel's Independence Day and Holocaust Memorial Day, reject all compromise with respect to having their young men do military service, or including in their schools anything other than Sacred texts. Not for them is the teaching of mathematics, sci- ence, or language, certainly not history, social studies are anything that smacks of evolution. Somewhat closer to the conventional are the ultra-Orthodox and Orthodox rabbis who accept education that prepares their young people for supporting themselves and their families, provided that the sexes are kept separate in school and then at work. Among the extremists are those whose demands for sexual segregation insist that women ride at the back of the bus and use separate sidewalks. There are Orthodox rabbis (i.e., not ultra- Orthodox) who endorse military service, but demand that soldiers not be exposed to female superiors or colleagues, or the sounds of women speaking or singing. Another issue that links some Orthodox with ultra-Orthodox is the stringency to be employed in conversions to Judaism. This may mean not only the strictest concern to screen and educate those wanting to become Jews, but to insist on a continuation of religious observance after the conversion. Unlike those of us born Jews, a convert might find the cherished status canceled if observed eating non-kosher food or violating the prohibitions associated with Sabbath. None of this passes quietly in the Jewish State. We have a long history of figuring out how to evade the demands of those who would regulate us according to ungodly standards. Individuals whom the Rabbinate does not ac- cept as Jews or allow to marry in Israel can marry who they will, outside of Israel, and be recognized as married by Israel's Interior Min- istry. This provides all they need with respect to economic rights of both partners and their children. Furthermore, Judaism has a history of accepting as "married" a couple known to be living together, without benefit of a marriage ceremony. There is a problem if the woman is married to someone else, but not if the man is married to someone else. That, too, can be evaded if neither partner is religious, and does not feel the need for rabbinic approval. The rabbis themselves have a long history of working around laws of the Torah. Death penalties pretty much disappeared from rab- binic rulings two centuries or so before the Common Era. Prohibitions against interest or commercial profit also went the way of "clarifications" added to God's laws. Styles have changed with time and place. The Talmud. recognizes the importance of local customs. Ancient synagogues have been found without the separation between men and women demanded by more recent rabbis who claim to operate according to Orthodox traditions. We all pay more for our food than com- parable products elsewhere due to kashrut, inspectors who must be paid to plod through our supermarkets inspecting the shelves, and the manipulations required of shana shmita, i.e., the requirement that the land rest every seventh year. Sharkansky on page 15A Shipley speaks Jim Shipley iiiiiii! i .......... When Jews were funny There was a time when Jewish humor ruled. Sometimes it might have been "racy" but never obscene. The great Jewish comics did not have to resort to profanity or description of body parts to get laughs. They told truths about themselves and their people. And it was mostly their people who laughed. The audience was usually live. Television was young and inexperienced. Yes, there was Ed Sullivan and he booked the big names like Myron Cohen and Buddy Hackett. But mostly? It was the Catskill Mountains and hotels like Grossingers, the Concord, Kutchers, Browns and the Neville. Jews, mostly from New York went to the mountains in the summer to get away from the stifling heat of the city. And because they or at least their parents were immigrants who spoke Yiddish and of course English now, there was a kinship of humor based on the Jewish experience. In the wonderful DVD titled, like this column "When Jews Were Funny" (available on Netflix), the filmmaker, a Jew married to a Croation, tries to recapture the past and learn why it was the Jews who topped the comedy list for s O many years. The truth? Jewish comics topped the comedy list for Jews. Black comics topped the charts for African American audiences, although they did not go to the Catskills. And Italian and Irish and other ethnic minorities also had their brilliant comedians. But the Jews? We topped the list. Maybe it was because of our particular suffering. Maybe because we were always the outsiders without a land of our own, whatever - we were funny. There is a rhythm to Jewish humor. It rolls off the tongue like a hot matzo ball. And most of the jokes are delivered in a manner that says "Oh yeah, everything if fine now, butjustwait!" Slowly they have left us. Oh yes, there are still a few around. Shecky Green is retired and in Palm Desert, California. Rickles is still insulting people. Phil Silvers is gone. So is Myron Cohen and Buddy Hackett and Alan King. They died and so did their audience. I know. First of all, to really, really love the humor, you have to be Jewish. To have that "Pintela Yid" inside you that recognizes the: rhythm of the joke, the intent of the joke and the butt of the joke. Moishe says to Abe: "Abe, we ride this train to the city every day, but we don't talk. You ,  , ,, never ask me how s business ... Abe replies: "All right already! How's business?" Moishe says: "Oy! Don't ask!" See - you have to be Jewish and over 50 at least. Years ago our youngest Son asked "Dad, what happens when the last old Jew dies?" He wasn't talking about the end of the Jewish people, we seem to beat that every time. He meant the accent, the head shrugs, the humor. The truth is, that time is not far off. I watched some of the old masters on YouTube. I took the humor t6 a monthly networking meeting Rachel and I host. I tell a few stories before introducing the speaker. This month? Little girl about six years old goes into the bakery. Says to the baker "My mommy said to tell your there was a fly in the raisin challa this week." Baker replies: "Bring back the fly, I'll give you a raisin." Bombed. Man shows up to work on time for 35 years. Nine A.M. on the dot, there he is. Never missed a day in 35 years. Then one day he comes in the office at 10 o'clock. His head is bloodied, his coat is torn, he limps badly. He says: "Oy, what a morning I had! Fell down awhole flight stairs. Terrible!" Boss says: "This took an hour?" Bombed. You gotta be Jewish you gotta be old. The "new" humor is so often crass and full of obscenities and body parts and functions. So little of it is what we would call '!ethnic." Maybe the Hispanics have it. Maybe there is still a strain of it in African American humor. But Jewish humor? Not so much. And it is a shame. Humor is as much of a people's heritage as their langtage and their cooking. Thank God there is still matzo ball soup and chopped liver and kugel. Yiddish is not dead. It is kept alive on the streets of Wil: liamsburg in Brooklyn by the Hasids, but it is also spoken by younger Jews who want to show their ties to European Jewry in other ways. When the lastwell stained recipe for mondel broit or Chulen finds its way into the dust bin of cookery; when the last time a joke that has an "oy!" in it is told, a light will go out, not perhaps an eternal light but a light that brightened Jewish history for generations. Perhaps, now, at the new year, is a good time to reflect on this. Shana Tova!
