Altogether, 200 blasts are sounded on each of the two days of Rosh Hashanah. The Bible lists other occasions when the Shofar was sounded in bibilical times. It was used to call attention to important public announcements and national events. The Shofar sounded the call to battle. The Shofar was also sounded to usher in the Sabbath and to announce the advent of a New Moon and the start of the festivals, as well as to make known the start of a fast. It was sounded to warn the people of impending natural disasters such as floods,locusts, etc., and of invasion by foreign armies. The Shofar's solemn tones also sounded to seal the dreaded Herem, or excommunication ban. The coming of a funeral cortege was also announced by the blowing of a Shofar. The annointment of a new king was announced to the nation by Shofar calls sounded from atop the highest mountains. The Messiah's coming will be heralded by the arrival of the Prophet Elijah blowing the Great Shofar of "Our Liberation." The earliest depiction of a Shofar known to us appears on a capital of the first century synagogue of Kfar Nahum (Capernaum) where, balanced by an incense shovel, it flanks a seven-branched cande- labrum. In the remains of the fifth century synagogues of Bet Alpha and Hammat Tiberias, and in a score of other synagogues in ancient Israel, the Shofar appears as a pro- minent, usually readily identifiable religious and national symbol. In the Jewish catacombs of Rome in Monteverde and Vigna Ranaanini, 12 tombstones and a sarcopha- gus bear depictions of Shofarot; in the Toronia catacomb the Shofar appears three times. In other parts of Italy, there are 10 tombstones on which the shofar is depicted. Nine of the Jewish "gold glasses" which have been discovered in ancient tombs -- some believe these gold glasses to be fragments of ancient Kiddush goblets -- bear depictions of the Shofar. Although the Bible men- tions the Shofar often, it does not explain its significance. However, a number of Jewish sages have addres- sed themselyes to this problem. Philo believes that the blasts are a reminder of the giving of the orah at Mount Sinai, when "the blast of the Shofar, grew louder and louder 't (Exodus 19:]9) Maimonides looked upon the call of the Shofar as a call to the Jew to waken from his spiritual lethargy and make full use of the free will granted to him and to choose the path of God and the Torah. The horns of all kasher animals except bulls are permissible for Shofarot. The ram's horn was preferred, however, because of the ram's symbolic link with the Akeda (Abraham's sacrifice of Isaac), particu- larly in those areas of the world where rams are not readily available, a wide variety of animal horns were employed for Shofarot. In part.s of North America, for example, the ibex provided horns. The Jews of Yemen and Eden preferred the long, tsted horn of the koodah, or great kudu. The koodah's corkscrew horns grow up to 1.5 meters long and make the longest, most picturesque -- and possibly the noisiest -- Shofarot. Professional Shofar makers, through variations in the technique and special emphases during the Shofar-fashioning process are able to make similar looking Shofarot which produce vastly different nuances of a sound. Painting pictures on the Shofar is strictly forbidden. But it is permissible to decorate the Shofarot with artistic carvings and biblical quotations.
