SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 19 Rosh Hashanah SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 20 Rosh Hashanah Many people familiar with the Jewish Pavilion assume that the Jewish Pavilion staff and volunteers bring the Jewish community to the doorsteps of our elders in long-term care. While this is true, it is not the whole story. In reality, many people in long-term care are not old. At least 10 percent of the people in long-term care are disabled or have severe health issues. Many are alone in the world. They may have never married, lost their spouse, never had children or have children that are unable to visit due to economic or geographic limitations. About half of the Jewish residents visited by the Pa- vilion, have no visitors other than theirweekly orbi-weekly JewishPavilion volunteer. The agency has more than quadrupled its volunteer force this year; going from 40 to 195 volunteers. Volunteers provide individ- ual visits, Shabbat and holiday meals, help with office work and coordinate'special events. Phyllis Goldberg, who lives at Westminster Care of Or- lando, is visited regularly by her family as well as Jewish Pavilion volunteers. Coordinating all of the holi- director. She is assisted by day celebrations and special Joy Clark, the coordinator events and keeping track of of volunteer services, whose and recruitingthevolunteers positio.n is being paid for by is amassive undertaking says a grant from the Governor's Cathy Swerdlow, programVolunteerFloridaFoundation.
