"Recovery like this--it is a disaster larger than Katrina in terms of the amount of water that fell--we're going to have short- and long-term recovery plans, but this is probabhgRoingtOtake us years to get back to where we were," said Taryn Baranowski, the chief market- ing officer for the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston. Seventy-one percent of the city's Jew- ish population of 63,700 lives in areas that have experienced high flooding, Baranowski told JTA on Wednesday. That includes 12,000 Jewish seniors. Hurricane Harvey first made landfall oo Friday evening near Corpus Christi, about 200 miles southwest of Houston. Local officials said at least 31 people are believed or suspected to have died due to Harvey, The New York Times reported Wednesday. Over 30,000 people are in shelters across the state, and rain was Houston on page 15A JFS Orlando has been in contact with its colleagues at Jewish Family Services in Houston. Despite difficult conditions, emergency of- ficials are working to assess the damage that has already left hundreds of thousands of people without power or access to food and water and shut down municipal services, highways, schools and community institu- tions. JFS Houston is the lead organization providing relief services to the Jewish community. "The unprecedented hur- ricane and subsequent flooding of Houston and the surrounding areas have been severe and is expected to be felt by all in that area for quite some time," said Eric Geboff, executive director of JFS Orlando. "The Talmud teaches us 'kol Yisrael are- vim zeh bazeh,' meaning all Jews are responsible for each other. It implies and has led to the obligation on all Jews to ensure that other Jews have their basic needs for food, clothing, and shelter taken care of. Simply by virtue of being a Jew, we are responsible for the well-being of other Jews, and vice versa. As members of the worldwide Jewish community, we have always responded to the needs of The Eric Geboff our family in times of crises. Now is the time to act." The Jewish Federation of Greater Houston has established an online form to collect donations for immediate needs in the community including food, water and shelter. Getting as many individuals as possible to safety and out of harm's way is the first goal, and funds will immediately be used in this way. Please consider doing what we Jews have done for centuries, responded to the needs of other Jews in times of crises. The works were created by St. Petersburg artist Judith Dazzio. What makes this exhibit so unique is that Dazzio painted these pieces as a result of hear- ing a Holocaust Survivor's personal story in her sixth- grade class. Her story stayed with Dazzio throughout her life. An adult now, she recalls, "I can still see the numbers on her arms. I can see her hold- ing up those faded pictures of her children that had been killed, and remember how she started crying when she talked about them."
