HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, SEPTEMBER 07, 2012 PAGE 9.& By Gloria Yousha Just so you'll know... I understand that a reader of this column feels that I am too liberal. To that I must say, being a Jewish New Yorker, as a youngster I was sort of left of center. But as I grew older (and now in my "twilight" years) I seem to have moved to right of center. Through the many years I have voted, I never voted the party line.. :always for the individual...probably al- Monica Lewinsluj most as many Republicans as Democrats. Also, my sons have different party affiliations. Politics is just that...politics! I am guilty, however, of looking for funny jokes and situ- ations I can write about to the amusement of my readers. Politics does not enter into it. For instance, if you recall, I had fun writing about MONICA LEWINSKY. And not too long ago I kidded about former Sen. JOHN EDWARDS and his motley situation. Also, I really had a ball a few columns ago when Sen. TODD AKIN made those ridiculous statements. (Just so you'll know.) Speaking of Sen: Akin... And his ridiculous state- ment that when a woman is raped she probably won't become pregnant. I wasn't raped and I was very preg- nant on July 16, 1969. That was the day, if you recall, that Apollo 11 was scheduled to fly to the moon. My spouse, at the time an aerospace engineer, worked on Gemini-4 through Apollo 16, and got me an invitation to The Kennedy Space Cen- ter to witness this historic event. However, my OBGYN,, NeilArmstrong Dr. Arthur Corey, refused to let me attend as it was too close to my due date. He feared that I might go into labor and with the crowded roads, etc., it might be treacherous for me to reach a hospital if I did. Anyway, Apollo 11 landed on the moon July 20, and I gave birth to our third son on July 27. (I could have gone!) The first man to set foot on the moon was Astronaut Nell Armstrong, who just passed away on Aug. 25. He was a mod- est man and a true hero. I hope he is in the history books and generations of children yet to come learn about him. I will never forget his words, "One small step for man... one giant leap for mankind." (I get emotional to this day when I hear them.) I was invited again to KSC for the next Apollo launch (Apollo 12) and was able to attend. In fact, I sat very close to then President Richard Nixon who snuggledunder his umbrella. (A lot of Secret Service kept me from the shelter of the umbrella. I got wet!) The Armstrong family made a request of all of us in his memory. They said "the next time you walk outside on a clear night, look up at the moon and think of Nell Armstrong, smile and wink at the moon." (I will.) Always remember September 11... And surely we will. Many lost dear family members on that day in New York. including my family who suffered the loss of Alan' Feinberg, a firefighter who died in Tower One of the World Trade Center. But this Sept. 11 date is not about that fate-filled day. Rather a luncheon featuring speaker MEAGAN BUREN. The event is scheduled for noon on that date at the Jewish Federation of Greater Meagan Buren Orlando. 851 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland. The cost is $5 (in order to help cover the cost of lunch). Meagan worked for the Israel Project managing focus groups and polling on issues that affect Israel's security in the U.S.. Europe, Russia and the Arab world. She has conducted interactive language and media training sessions for ambassadors, top-ranking Israeli officials, professionals and leaders key to impacting Israel's image. As part of a small group of advisors she has impacted the messaging of Israeli Prime Ministers and their key staff artd orchestrated media tours of Israeli spokespeople worldwide. Meagan left the Israel Project to serve as senior project "director for Luntz Global. a leader in corporate, political and nonprofit message creation and image management Call 407-657'9405 or 407-834-8787 worldwide. She holds a master's in communications, culture and technology from Georgetown University. At the luncheon you will have the opportunity to learn the magic words to use when you advocate for Israel. RSVP at www.JFGO.ORG, or phone KAREN COHEN at 407-645-5933, ext 228. And speaking of the Jewish Federation... I recently received an email from The Jewish Federation naming Dr. SUSAN BACH a "mensch of the week." The email read as follows: "Dr. Bach has brought new interest and excitement to the Holocaust Center's adult education events. Bach is 'second generation,' the daughter of Holocaust survivors. She has been actively involved in the Holocaust Center in the last decade, bringing her expertise and enthusiasm to its programs. She helped the Center launch a community book club that started in January of this year. "Bach, the executive director of the Center for Leadership Development at the Rollins College Crurnmer Graduate School of Business, has been facilitating the discussions and encouraging the active participation of a dozen par- ticipants. With her guidance, the group laughs, shares stories, reflects on book themes, discusses related current events and even respectfully disagrees with one another. "The book Club has proved to be an ideal fit for her love of learning and her warm, interactive style." Still celebrating... Irv and I are still going out to dinner to celebrate the occasion of our 52nd wedding anniversary (and they said it wouldn't last)! Recently we went to an Outback Steakhouse for dinner and wehad a most delightful waitress. Her name is MEGAN MATTHEWS and she confided that it was her very first time on the job, (She may have been nervous, but she was just perfect!) We were told that she was trained by DJEMIL DANIEL, a waiter Irv and I were fortunate to have on Mother's Day. (I wrote about him back then.) The only problem I had with Megan?... She is too pretty. I can'thandle the competition! (Whatever happened to obese, homely waitresses that are efficient?) One for the road... I just got a "smart phone." It does many things besides just phoning. It takes photos and video, a slide out keyboard for sending texts, has games, an alarm clock, a calendar with a "to do" list.., and much more. . (Surely my soon- to-be teenage granddaughter will say that I'm "with it.") That got me thinking.., what if Microsoft were Jewish? 1. Your PC would shut down automatically on Friday evenings. 2. Your start button would be replaced with a "Let's go. I'm not getting any younger" button. 3.Your CD player would be labeled "Nu, so play my music already." 4. You would hear "Hava Nagila" during startup. 5. When your PC is multi-tasking you would occasion- ally hear an "oy gevalt. 6. After 20 minutes in an idle state, your PC would go "schloffen." 7. All computer viruses would be cured with chicken soup.
