HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, AUGUST 29, 2014 PAGE 5A It ain't over till it's over, but one can step back and learn By Mark Langfan Here are some preliminary take-aways from the 2014 GazaWar (which may not even be over yet): 1. Obama, not America, is an enemy of Israel, and an ally of Hamas. Did Winston Churchill ever call and warn Eva Braun to leave the Hitler's Berlin Fuhrer Bunker before the allies tried to bomb it? The Gaza War has proved Presi- dent Obama, not America, is an enemy of the State of Israel, and an unwavering ally of the Gaza Hamas-Terror-State. On June 11, 2014, the day before Hamas kidnapped and then brutally murdered the three Israeli teenage civilian boys, "U.S. Senators Ben Car- din (D-Md.) and Susan Collins (R-Maine) led a bipartisan supermajority of 88 Senators in sending a letter to President Barack Obama expressing By Ronald S. Lauder Why is the world silent while Christians are being slaughtered in the Middle East and Africa? In Europe and in the United States, we have witnessed demonstrations over the tragic deaths of Pal- estinians who have been used as human shields by Hamas, the terrorist organization that controls Gaza. The United Na- tions has held inquiries and focuses its anger on Israel for defending itself against that same terrorist organization. But the barbarous slaughter of thousands upon thousands of Christians is metwith relative indifference. strong reservations about U.S. relations with the newly formed Palestinian unity government [with Hamas]. 'The recent formation of a Palestinian Authority unity government supported by Hamas, a designated Foreign Terrorist Organization that has never publicly accepted the Quartet principles, rep- resents a serious setback to efforts to achieve peace," the Senators wrote. "By its ac- tions and inaction, Hamas has demonstrated it is not a partner for peace." Citing the Palestinian Anti-Terrorism Act of 2006 and restrictions contained in the Omnibus Appropriations Act of 2014, the Senators re- minded the President of the legal prohibition on "foreign assistance to Hamas or any power-sharing government of which Hamas is a member or over which Hamas has undue influence.'"' Despite the fact that Hamas is a U.S. Designated Foreign Terrorist Organization under United States law, Obama overtly sided with and offered aid money to Hamas from beginning-to-end of the war, incessantly demanding Israel had to "ceasefire," and lift the blockade. The only substan- tive difference with Erdogan and Obama during the war was that Erdogan openly called Israel "war criminals," while Obama merely publicly laid the legal case for Israel being war criminals. Obama's teleprompter- cue-card support to Hamas on Hamas' ceasefire demands of opening the port insured Hamas' continued attacks and the shedding of Israeli blood. Hamas didn't stop rocketing Israel because Obama was always Hamas' 'ace in the hole;' and, Hamas knows it. 2. Obama hates Israel, and the U.S. Congress and America love Israel. Obama is a lost cause. Israel must focus on the U.S. Congress and the American people. Israel must go to the mats against Obama, and prepare for the worst 2 and 1/2 years of the Israel-U.S. relationship. American Jewry must be publicly disabused of the lie that "Obama is the best-friend Israel ever had." 3. Obama is an enemy of Abbas and an ally of Hamas. Obama 'supported' Abbas only as a useful-idiot straw- man to get Israel to cede the 'West Bank.' Once Abbas signed the 'Peace' Agreement/ Abbas'-death-warrant and a Palestinian state was created, Obama knew Abbas and his Fatah-gangsters would be mass-murdered and thrown off buildings by Hamas just like they were in Gaza in 2007. Abbas should now understand that Israel, and the IDF, are the only things standing between Abbas and a very shallow grave 4. Obama is an enemy of Egypt and Saudi Arabia, and an ally of Hamas, Turkey and Iran. Israel shouldn't feel Obama hates only Israel. In the Gaza War, Obama proved he is a foe of Egypt and Saudi Arabia as well. Hamas can just fire rock- ets at Israel, but Hamas and its Muslim Brotherhood are trying to actually behead Sisi and the kings and princes of SaudiArabia. In short, Obama wants nothing more than to make good on his 2002 Iraq War Speech promise that "You want to fight, President Bush? Let's fight to make sure our so-called allies in the Middle East, the Saudis and the Egyptians, stop oppressing their people..." From Day 1 of Obama's Administration, Obama's Mid- East policies have attempted to overthrow Amei, ica's allies, Who will stand up for the Christians? The Middle East and parts of central Africa are losing entire Christian communities that have lived in peace for centuries. The terrorist group Boko Haram has kidnapped and killed hundreds of Chris- tians this year--ravaging the predominantly Christian town of Gwoza, in Borno State in northeastern Nigeria, two weeks ago. Half a million Christian Arabs have been driven out of Syria during the three-plus years of civil war there. Christians have been persecuted and killed in coun- tries from Lebanon to Sudan. Historians may look back at this period and wonder if people had lost their bearings. Letters To The Editor We are a diverse community and we welcome your letters and viewpoints. Or e-mail to news@ The 'other side' will never make peace with Israel Dear Editor: The article by David Born- stein in the Heritage dated Aug. 15, is another example of someone trying to make sense of the "other side." Since Judaism values life, the ten commandments, and our whole philosophy of trying to help people and improve the world, it is hard to fathom that there is a re- ligion, Islam, that promotes honor killings, killings of Christians and Jews, and intimidation of all those in Islam who want to convert or all those who do not embrace Islam. The killing of Christians and Jews in nearly every Mos- lem country is going on today. Those who do not understand the danger of Islam will find it at their doors here in America. Again, it is naive to think that "the other side" will ever make peace with Israel. They even state time and time again that will not hap-pen! Sandi Solomon Casselberry No enhanced care for the elderly thanks to Florida politicians Dear Editor: Moving down to the low- est rung of our society are those who lost their job, are poor, homeless, wanderihg mentally ill, institutional- ized and at the lowest level, those warehoused. The latter group is in so-called rehabilitation, nursing Few reporters have traveled to Iraq to bear witness to the Nazi-like wave of terror that is rolling across that country. The United Nations has been mostly mum. World leaders seem to be consumed with other matters in this strange summer of 2014. There are no flotillas traveling to Syria or Iraq. And the beautiful celeb- rities and aging rock stars-- why doesn't the slaughter of Christians seem to activate their social antennas? President Obama should be commended for ordering airstrikes to save tens of thou- sands of Yazidis, who follow an ancient religion and have been stranded on a mountain home or assisted living facilities. Fifty to 60 percent of the residents in those facilities have no relatives nearby, have outlived their relatives or friends, and consequentially have no advocates or visitors. From day to day all they see are staff uniforms. If they are very lucky, they getplaced into a wheelchair and taken to a dining room for meals. Most of the clients had to wear dia- pers all day because there isn't enough staff to take care of them. While it may not be that bad all over the country, 24 states, including Florida have decided not to accept federal money to enhance their care. Why politicians have decided it's more important to be re- elected than to take care of the people they were elected to serve so they reject the money, which would help the bottom rung of our society. I had the opportunity to entertain at 40 of the larger facilities in the central Florida area. I did each of the 40 groups repeatedly for four years. This gave me the op- portunity to see the cream of the clients. The most alert were brought in order to see me. In a few cases, all the people that were wheeled into the room appeared drugged. Unfortunately, my wife had a recent accident, so I could see firsthand what went on in the best facility around. What I found ranged from cold food, wrong food, onto the more serious of not responding to in northern Iraq, besieged by Sunni Muslim militants. But sadly, airstrikes alone are not enough to stop this grotesque wave of terrorism. The Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is not a loose coalition of jihadist groups, but a real military force that has managed to take over much of Iraq with a successful business model that rivals its coldblooded spearhead of death. It uses money from banks and gold shops it has captured, along with control of oil resources and old-fashioned extortion, to finance its killing machine, making itperhaps thewealthi- est Islamist terrorist group in distress calls, wrong medicine andwrong medical treatment. Now remember, this was the best! If you don't have an advo- cate you become a"Lost Soul." There are many organiza- tions in the area that say they act as advocates for those that are alone. In the 10 days my wife was at the facility, except for a very few family or friends of clients, I saw no one from these "advocate support groups.,, One of the things that I have found is, that although there are many groups of this nature, most people join mainly to get their name on the roster, just to say they belong and only a very few actually visited. Now let's go back to the "Lost Soul" who sees no friends or relatives who lies in bed or sits in a wheel chair all day. What goes on inside the clients' mind? Part of my show was to doing some magic. At one point of the magic por- tion, I make things disappear. I then asked if anyone would like me to make them disap- pear, but warned them I was not sure I could get them back. Only one woman raised her hand. She was in her late 70s, had both legs amputated; no one came to see her, and she probably sat in a diaper all day. She raised her hand very slowly, and in a desper- ate sounding, voice said, "I would like to disappear!" Now close your eyes, and visualize yourself, in that chair! Bill Kahn Maitland the world. But where it truly excels is in its carnage, rival- ing the death orgies of the Middle Ages. It has ruthlessly targeted Shiites, Kurds and Christians. "They actually beheaded children and put their heads on a stick," a Chaldean-American businessman namedMarkArabo told CNN, describing a scene in a Mosul park. "More children are getting beheaded, mothers are getting raped and killed, and fathers are being hung." This week, 200,000 Ara- maeans fled their ancestral homeland around Nineveh, having already escaped Mosul. The general indifference to ISIS, with its mass executions of Christians and its deadly preoccupation with Israel, isn't just wrong; it's obscene. In a speech before thou- sands of Christians in Buda- pest in June, I made a solemn promise that just as I will not be silent in the face of the growing threat of anti- Semitism in Europe and in the Middle East, I will not be indifferent to Christian suffer- ing. Historically, it has almost always been the other way around: Jews have all too often the Saudis and the Egyptians, and replace them with Is- lamist extremists. 5. Obama will never attack Iran's nukes, he will protect them. The GazaWar proved Obama will never attack Iran's nuclear program, and will secretly warn Iran of any impending Israeli attack. If Israel thinks it can rely on American mili- tary re-supply in the event of an Israeli attack on Iran and a counter-attack by Hezbollah, Israel better think again. 6. Israel is an ally of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Jordan and Moderate Islam. Despite everything Obama did in the Gaza War to sever the growing strategic align- ment between Israel and the moderate Moslem countries, the proto-alliance held firm. 7. Israel can't rely onAmer- ica for military re-supply. Langfan on page 14A been the persecuted minority. But Israel has been among the first countries to aid Christians in South Sudan. Christians can openly practice their religion in Israel, unlike in much of the Middle East. This bondbetweenJews and Christians makes complete sense. We share much more than most-religions. We read the same Bible, and share a moral and ethical core. Now, sadly, we share a kind of suffering: Christians are dying because of their beliefs, because they are defenseless and because the world is indif- ferent to their suffering. Good people must join to- gether and stop this revolting wave of violence. It's not as if we are powerless. I write this as a citizen of the strongest military power on earth. I write this as a Jewish leader who cares about my Christian brothers and sisters. The Jewish people under- stand all too well what can happen when the world is silent. This campaign of death must be stopped. Ronald S. Lauder is the president of the World Jewish Congress. Dry Bones
