HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH I~EWS, AUGUST 14, 2009 PAGE 9A By Gloria ousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 How unlikely is this?... This piece comes directly from the Associated Press on the Internet: Israel's biggest daily news- paper is boasting a new in- ternational correspondent... Madonna. The Material Girl's byline is on the front page of Wednes- day's [July 29] issue of Yediot Ahronot with an excerpt from her upcoming article head- lined: 'How My Life Changed.' The paper translated her words into Hebrew. Madonna's full article was to be published Friday [July 31]. Madonna isn't Jewish but Madonna she has adopted the Hebrew name of Esther and studies Jew- ish mysticism. She made a private pilgrimage to Israel in 2004 and plans two shows in the country in September as part of her Sticky & Sweet tour. In her article, the 50-year-old entertainer describes her religious awakening almost 14 years ago, saying she realized fame -and fortune were not the end but only the beginning." (Madonna is leaning toward Judaism? Why not?) I received an e-mail... This e-mail was from TAM- MY SNOOK, who works for DAVID MELNIK. It reads in part, as follows: "BusinessWeek ran this article two weeks ago about Orlando's David Melnik. He is responsible for the self-service kiosks you see at all the air- ports, and now his sights are set on vision screening for pre-verbal children, especially those with special needs. Just because your busi- ness comes up with a great idea doesn't mean it'll sell. 'A lot of inventions come to be DavidMelnik with the idea that it's great and it'll make everything better. But that's not what drives industries,' says David Melnik. whose company Venturecore Holdings markets PediaVision. a technology he created to assess children's vision problems by taking their pictures. 'Businesses want to know whether it's going to save them money and make them money.' The PediaVision Assessment Solution consisting of a handheld screener, a harness to attach it to a desk. and a Dell laptop programmed with special software--sells for $10.500. and the company has sold upwards of 100 since introducing it in 2008. In a recent talk with BusinessWeek's REBECCA REISNER, Melnik, who also created the technology used in airport self-service check-in kiosks, shared his strategy for ,devising different pitches thatwiH appeal to the various players in organizations that are prospective clients." (In today's world, it's all about money.., but I am still very protid of our own David Melnik for his wonderful creations!) Just a reminder about a fun time... On Sunday, Aug. 16, Congregation Ohev Shalom will pres- ent a program called Concert On The Lawn (but indoors... it's too hot outside) for new and prospective members. It will take place from 1 to 3 p.m. The membership Committee will try to transform the Social hall into a lawn type atmosphere by decorating with fake grass, picnic baskets, lawn chairs etc. (Good luck!) Cantor ALLAN ROBUCK,-along with a guest cantor, will present a wonderful concert for all ages to enjoy. (Allan is a terrific singer and pianist.) This is urgent... Please read and respond: In December 2008, Jewish Family Services placed an emergency call to the com- munity asking for help for the pantry, which was at a criti- cally low level. The community responded positively and more than 1,400 pounds of food was donated within a two-week period of time. Now, JFS must ask the com- munity again for their support. This summer, JFS has reached an all-time high in the amount of food they are dispersing to individuals and families in need. In the first six months Barry Kudlowitz of 2009, JFS dispersed 22 percent more food and most likely will break a record number of 90,000 meals by the end of the year. On a daily basis, JFS schedules appointments for 18 families or individuals to pick up food. "We can no longer keep up with this demand," states BARRY KUDLOWlTZ, executive director at JFS. "We are looking at reducing the number of families we see on a daily basis to 12 so that we can get through the week." How can you help? Nonperishable and can goods can be de- livered directly to JFS, at 2100 Lee Road in Winter Park, Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. "Cash donations are also vital," continued Kudlowitz. "Last week JFS spent more than $2,500 to purchase a one-week supply of food from Second Harvest Food Bank. Although it's very difficult to have to ask for help, I am confident our community will be there for us." For more information on how you can help, contactADRIENNE COOPERMAN, emergency services manager, at 407-644-7593, ext. 243. One for the road... Sadie goes to see her rabbi and complains about her bacl headaches. She whines, cries, and talks about her poor living conditions for hours. All of a sudden. ' Sadie shouts, overjoyed, "Rabbi. your holy presence has cured me! My headache is gone!" To which the rabbi replies, "No Sadie. it !s not gone. I have it now." One more for the road... Maurice has a business appointment, and he arrives a little early. The receptionist points to a comfortable easy chair and asks him to be seated for a while. Maurice settles down. picks up a glossy magazine, opens it and tries to read. However, he finds that he cannot concentrate because he is distracted due to a rumpus coming from behind one of the doors leading off the reception area. Maurice goes over tO the receptionist and asks, "What's going on in there?" She replies. "It's a partners' meeting." "But why are they shouting at each other?" Maurice asks. "It's a battle of wits." she replies. Maurice asks: "Who is in there?" And she answers, "Horowits, Lebowits, Rabbinowits and Abramowits." (Sounds like a bunch of"half-wits" to me.) Would you believe, one more?... Joseph had just passed his driving test, so he asked his father, wh~ was a rabbi, if they could discuss the use of the car. His father took him to his study and said to him, "Joseph, I'll make a deal with you. You bring your school grades up, study your Bible a little, get your hair cut and we'll talk about it." After about a month Joseph came back and again asked his father if they could discuss the use of the car. They again went to the father's study where his father said, "Joseph, I've been real proud of you. You have raised your school grades, you've studied your Bible diligently, but you didn't get your hair cut!" Joseph waited a moment and replied, "You know Dad, I've been thinking about that. You know Samson had long hair, Abraham had long hair, Noah had long hair and even Moses had long hair... 2 To which the rabbi replied, "Yes, and they walked every where they went!" On behalf of the JFS Board & Staff... Thank 3ou for3 our generous food and monetary contributions. The outpouring of support from the community has been tremendous. Please remember hunger is a 365 day concern in our communit3.
