HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, AUGUST 10, 2012 PAGE .'. By Gloria Yousha --- It's the economy, stupid This information comes to us from The World Jew- ish Congress Foundation and me: "The United States Citi- zenship and Immigration Service reports a steep drop in the number of Israelis relocating stateside. "In 2011, the latest year for which figures are available, 3,826 Israelis immigrated to America, compared to 4,525 in 2010; in 2009, that figure was 5,612." (Who can blame them? Listen to television's Nancy Grace and you'll find thatRabbi Marvin Hier there are many gruesome kidnappings and murders in the U.S. daily. Israelis probably feel safer at home in spite of rocket fire and the constant threat of terrorism!) "Comparing the figures of 2011 with those of six years ago, Israelis moving to the States numbered 5,943, reflect- ing a drop of 35 percent. '% U.S. immigration legal expert claims that the fewer number of Israelis moving stateside is attributable in part to the current state of our economy!" On the other hand we are visiting them: "First quarter tallies of tourists to Israel recorded 752,000 entries, an all-time high according to the Central Bureau of Statics. That is two percent more tourists than in the corre- sponding quarter of 2011, and one percent higher than in the first quarter of 2010, which previously accounted for the highest figure." (A lot of folks are visiting Israel and who can blame them? What history! What deep meaning! What a stirring of emotions! Where else can you ride a camel, float in the Dead Sea, go to the top of Masada, walk the streets of the old city of Jerusalem, pray at the Western Wall, etc?) Israel is truly special. Here are the words of Rabbi MAR- VIN HIER of the Simon Wiesenthai Center: "The Prophet Isaiah did not issue his call for tolerance and righteousness from Portugal, nor did Jeremiah utter his lament from France, nor did Ezekial speak his vision of a Messianic Age from Spain. King Solomon's magnifi- cent temple was not built in England, the Mishna and the Jerusalem Talmud were not compiled in Germany. "No, all of this rich history took place in the land of Israel the land of our forefathers, the land of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, the promised land that God told Moses to lead his people toward." And in that vain I suggest you phone EMELY KATZ at our Jewish Federation in Maitland for information on a planned Mission to Israel. To learn the details, itinerary and costs, phone her at 407-645-5933, ext. 239. For the Jewish Pavilion, GLORIA NEWBERGER runs a weekly Ice Cream Social at Savannah Court that switches to monthly over the summer months. Last month, the residents were entertained by ARNOLD GRACE of Medicaid Done Right. They were treated to an outstanding operatic performance followed by their usual sing-a-long. For the date and time of the next social, phone WENDY LEVINE at 407-678-9363. (Save some ice cream for me!) One for the road BEWARE This joke is rated X but it is funny (at least to me). Morris, an elderly man, goes to a brothel and tells the madam that he would like a beautiful, young lady for the night. The madam gives him a quick look-over and is rather puzzled. So she asks him, "How old are you?" "Why," replies Morris, "I'm 98 years old today." "Ninety-eight!" the madam exclaims. "Don't you realize you've had it?" "Oh," he says, "in that case, how much do I owe you?" can be purchased at the following locations: ORANGE COUNTY JCC, 851 N.
