After ten minutes the man returns with no answer and hands over $1,000 to the rabbi. He then asks the rabbi,"What kind of animal and BETTY STEIN was it?" Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 The rabbi says, "How should I know?" and gives him $50. Here's a similar question What being is very, very, very high; very wide; loves burgers; loves sports; loves Orlando; loves Los Angeles; loves Miami (in that order); and loves publicity? Can't guess? (See photo). At least it won't cost you $1,000! That little gal in the "Mutt and Jeff" pose with Shaquille O'Neal is our own BETTY STEIN. I had the pleasure of writing about Betty recently but received this email and wanted to pass it along: "I just thought you might get a kick out of this picture of me with 'The Shaq' taken by Shaq's father at a restaurant. I wanted a photo of both of them but his father insisted I be in the picture instead." I understand from Betty that the owner of the establish- ment wants to hang the photo in his restaurant. (Are the walls tall enough?) All the restaurant patrons that day referred to Betty as a "celebrity" and she is! A movie star In life, the late Jean Sapir was a "star." She was a wonderful person, a wonderful dancer, a wonder- ful mother and grandmother! She was also the star of this column once, as I had the pleasure of writing about her and her daughter, GERI ECK- STEIN of Winter Park. Jean passed away more than a year and a half ago and she is sorely missed by her loved ones. Recently, Geri received a phone call from an out of town relative of hers. "Your mother is in an HBO movie," the rela- tive told her. "WHAT?" That pretty much sums up Geri's reaction. She got the name of the movie and watched it. Sure enough there was her morn, Jean, dancing and even making a joke! Geri made sure she video- taped it the next time it aired and I recently saw it. The title of the HBO docu- mentary movie is Ruthie and Connie. It is the story of two Jew- ish women, life-long friends, whose situation turns to love. The movie starts in 1958 Brooklyn, when each was married with children. It chronicles their lives up to the mid 1990s, two senior citizens who winter in West JEAN SAPIR Palm Beach. On one of their winters, theyhosted a dance for Jewish seniors. The camera caught Connie taking Geri's morn, Jean, for a twirl on the dance floor. One could see what a fine dancer Jean had been. When she was complimented on her dancing style, Jean said, "And I'm supposed to be sick!" Connie's response? "You're supposed to be sick? I love it!" And of course, having this surprise this lasting memory of her precious morn, Jean, makes Geri very happy. In fact, she loves it! A treat for the eyes At a recent visit to the Orlanao Broadway Dinner Theater, I had the pleasure of viewing art before the pleasure of dining and watching a fabulous show, A Chorus Line. Wonderful photographer, ROOTIE WILDER, has a one woman show running during the musical, in the little gal- lery off the theater lobby. Rootie is known to the Jewish community, particularly the Seniors of the Jewish Community Center, because she wrote and performed her own play titled The Witness for them. Rootie says she gets much of her inspiration forher beauti- ful photography from the"quintessentiai Japanese aesthetic, Wabi-sabi." "Wabi-sabi," she explains, "is the beauty of things imperfect, impermanent, and incomplete." (That sounds like me!) She goes on, "It is a beauty of things modest and humble. It is the beauty of things unconventional. It is lines in a person's face that lets us know how much they have laughed, considered carefully, and grimaced in their lifetime," Rootie's explanation is as beautiful as her photography! Her art show will continue through August 22. Catch it if you can! Speaking of laugh lines One more for the road: A couple drove down a country road for several miles not saying a word to one another. An earlier discussion had led to an argument and neither of them wanted to concede their position. As they passed a barnyard of mules, goats, and pigs, the husband asked his wife sarcastically, "Relatives of yours?" "Yep," the wife replied. "In-laws."
