Mekedeci does not have the authority to prevent the scheduling of games, according to Pearlman, which leaves the final decision in the hands of school principals. Fortun- ately, he said. school coaches have not yet set up football games schedules. CRC will send a calendar of Jewish holidays to Orange County schools on August 15. The committee also plans to mail a "'Star Alert" bulletin three tins during the academic year, to some 4.700 teachers in Orange County. informing themof upcoming Jewish holidays. CRC will have to purchase a mailing list of Orange County teachers. The alternative, according to Pearlman. would be to send the information to the 107 principals in the Orange County school system requesting that they forward it to the teachers, But the CRC chairman feels this would be "ineffective," In the past, CRC has disseminated the information through the administra- tion. "Everything at this point is up to the principals' discretion," Pearlman said. He hopes to make it school board policy not to schedule any major school events during a Jewish holiday. CRC's hands are somewhat tied for this academic year because the teacher's union-school board contract was finalized last April and May. The contract calls for final exams to be held Monday and Tuesday of the last week of school. ,Shavuot will fall on those days. "All we can hope for this year is to have the exam dates rescheduled for Jewish students," Pearlman said. Next year CRC will make its imput prior to contract negotiations. Peartman pointed out that Mekedeci "went out of his way to be cordial although made no concessions during the meeting." Pearlman hopes to meet with a Seminole County school board official in the near future.
