HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, JULY 27, 2012 PAGE 9A By Gloria Yousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 Urgent! Please read and react Jewish Family Services (JFS) needs us, every one of us and especially now during the summer months. This is (in part and out of order) taken from a letter recently sent to the community: "During this crucial time (summer), JFS needs our help in keeping its pantry stocked, which is running dangerously low. Donations of healthy nonperishable items are critically needed and can be brought to the JFS office during regular business hours. Cash donations are equally, if not more helpful, as it will allow JFS to purchase food and keep the shelves fully supplied. "Summer break is in full session for all counties in Central Florida. Families that have qualified for subsidized or free meals during the school year are now faced with the critical challenge of having an additional expense for which they are not prepared." (More severe than much of our country, "nearly one in four kids in the Orlando area face the possibility of going hungry," the letter says.) It continues "During the summer months, parents will come to JFS for help and the food pantry will be pushed to its limit. No one is ever turned away. Children and their families that come to JFS will be given bags filled with nutritious items, including cereal, tuna, beef stew, pasta, rice, soups, beans, peanut butter, canned fruit and vegetables and even chicken and beef." (Let's all help. Food is a most basic need. No child should ever be hungry. We are generous and caring. I'm confident we will react.) Speaking of food (And celebrations), Last week, GERRY ECKSTEIN ar- ranged a "Birthday Brunch" at Bagel King, Casselberry, for ESTELLE KLEIN. Gerry, HELEN MOS- KOWITZ, MARGE and BENNET BUXBAUM, RON SAVAGE, SOLLY HABER, LARRY HECHLER, SHERRY WRIGHT and "Yours truly" and my spouse, joined Estelle for a terrific brunch and the singing of "Happy Birthday." We had a good time (with colorful balloons, etc.) and a very pleasant waitress, BRITTNEY TAKAS, who made Estelle Klein sure we had everything our hearts desired. (Except she never brought me George Clooney as I requested!) Estelle has much to be pleased about. She knows her friends love her as do her wonderful sons, KEVIN and Dr. PERRY A. KLEIN, who are both in town. In fact, Perry, a psychological counselor, has his office on Seminola Boulevard in Casselberry. We wish Estelle, who happens to be a lovely lady, awonderful birthday "and many more." (It's always nice to gather with friends for happy occasions!) Speaking of parties Adorable CHEYNE OLSON (pronounced Shainie as in beautiful) made an English style tea party recently for her grandmother JOAN, her grandmother BERTIE and others. Cheyne, almost 9, is the daughter of JESSICA and STUART OLSON of Oviedo. She served poppy seed muffins, chocolate chip muffins, scones with fresh cream, Earl Grey tea, delicious fruit cups and more. (Why wasn't I invited? Doesn't she know I lift my tea cup with my pinkie finger daintily extended?) Helping Cheyne with her charming tea party was her cousin TERESA, who is about the same age. Teresa's morn, KAREN, and aunt JEAN, also helped out. And the best part? NO MEN ALLOWED!) Another urgent appeal I received the following emaii last week. It was from BARBARA LOFTON, Ph.D Area Coordinator for Florida of the International Cultural Exchange Services (ICES). Maybe we can help out. I pass it along to you: "I am in need of families to host students for nine months max. There is no financial outlay except room and board. Each student comes with an allowance of $400. "I am especially in need im- mediately of a family that can host a 17-year old Jewish girl from Damascus, she was to Cheyne Olson be hosted in Georgia and the school would not accept foreign exchange students. I am also in need of five additional families that may be interested in the cultural experience of hosting. "If you have questions please contact me at 321-439-2102(c) or 407-622-0192(0)." (Time to open our hearts and homes.) "Novel, fun, and enticing" That's what ESTELLE WHEELER strives for when planning prospective member socials at Congregation Ohev Shalom. (Actually, the COS building is so beautiful it is enticing enough!) Estelle writes, "A lot of time and energy has been spent trying to plan novel, fun, enticing and appealing events to attract prospective members. So may I present Ohev's lineup: "On Sunday Aug. 5 at 10:30 a.m we will present a 'Taste of Ohev' brunch. Using a menu concept and a restaurant setting from the maitre d through the various courses of a meal, we hope to whet the appetite for all Ohev's fabulous programs and activities. Of course a light brunch will be served. "On Wednesday Aug. 15th at 7 p.m, we invite prospective members to 'Cruise Over To Ohev.' This time using the cruise theme, we will set sail with a captain's cocktail party and visit all of Ohev's ports of activities and programs. "Both of these events will take place at COS and each will offer an opportunity to win up to a $360 reduction of first year's dues. "Finally, on Friday at 6 p.m. we invite all prospective members to join the Ohev family at a Shabbat dinner with an Oriental flare to be followed with inspiring Shabbat services and an inviting Oneg. "Although there is certainly no charge to any of these events, we would ask that an RSVP be made with the Ohev office by simply calling 407-298-4650." A "not so gentle" reminder On Sunday, July 29, Mr. KENNY LEE with Mr. B.J. Stephens, presents "A Night of Cabaret!" It takes place at the Sheraton Orlando North Hotel, 600 N. Lake Destiny Drive, Maitland. For details, phone 407-670-4418. (BE THERE0 One for the road I know, I know, after last week's joke mixup you must think I drink! Here are two more jokes to make up for it: Bernie is a very wealthy man indeed. One day in June, he goes on holiday with his latest, much younger girlfriend, Sarah. As the days in the sun wore on, Bernie and Sarah began to talk about the differences in their ages and interests between them. Bernie took this opportunity to ask Sarah what was, to him, an important question. He asked, "If I lost everything, all my money, my mansion, my Rolls Royce, tomorrow, would you still love me, Sarah?" "Yes, darling," said Sarah, "and I'd miss you too." And the second joke: Did you hear about Moishe, who was sexually inexperienced? One day, Moishe went into a bookshop and bought "How to Hug." Later on, when he started to read his latest purchase, Moishe realized it was Volume Seven of the Encyclopedia Britannica. man wou caregivers, nl Please call Jeff at for more information.
