The Israel Defense Forces
(IDF) launched "Operation
Protective Edge" in Gazaafter
at least 80 rockets and mortar
shells were fired at Israel on
Monday night.
Above Netivot and Ash-
dod, the Iron Dome missile
defense system shot down 12
rockets. InAshdod, residents
fled for shelter as rocket
sirens sounded throughout
the city, and eight people were
injured. Beersheba Israel's
largest southern city--and
Ofakim were also subjected
to Gaza rocket fire, with
most of those rockets either
striking open fields or being
interceptedby the Iron Dome.
Early warning sirens went off
in Jerusalem and Belt Shem-
esh, but they were apparently
false alarms.
Israeli Defense Minister
Moshe Ya'alon declared a state
of emergency in communities
within 25 miles of the Gaza
border. On Tuesday, Israel
approved the call-up of 40,000
reserve soldiers after the IDF

Naftali Frenkel, Gilad Shaar
and Eyal Yifrach provided a
capstone to a harrowing or-
deal that over 18 days united
Israelis in hope and prayer.
When the teens were found
dead Monday night, their bod-
ies lying half exposed in a field
near Hebron, the national
outpouring became one of
grief and despair.
It is simultaneously a na-
tional tragedy for Israel and
a personal one for the boys'
families. And at the funeral
and the memorials preceding
it, the national and personal
melded together.
The country shared in the
families' tragedy. The families
became national heroes.
"We prayed, each of us alone
and all of us together, for a
miracle," said Israeli President
Shimon Peres in his eulogy.
"We prayed that we would see
them return in peace to the
families, to their homes and
to us all. Sadly we were hit by
the tragedy of their murder
and a deep grief enveloped
our people."
When news of the boys'
death hit Monday night, Is-
raelis looked lost, unsure how
to proceed after more than
two apprehensive weeks since
the teens were kidnapped on

Emerging from the chaos
of the Syrian civil war, the
Islamic State in Iraq and
Greater Syria (ISIS) terror-
ist group has gained the
world's attention for its brutal
medieval-style Islamic justice
and its swift victories in Iraq,
threatening to overrun the
weak U.S.-backed government
there. But now ISIS is also
setting its sights on Jordan,
threatening to drag Israel into
the global jihadist conflict.
"They are avicious and bru-
tal group, and have even done
some things that al-Qaeda
thought were unwise," Elliot
Abrams, who served as deputy
national security advisor for
former President George W.
Bush and is currently a senior
fellow at the Council on For-
eign Relations, told JNS.org.
"More people, more money,
and more guns. They do con-
stitute a real threat," Abrams
said.
The goals of ISIS are clear
from its name. Alternatively
translated as the Islamic State
in Iraq and al-Sham--the
Arabic name for the Levant
region--or the Islamic State
in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL),
the group seeks to control the
entire region, which in addi-
tion to Iraq and Syria includes
Jordan, Lebanon, and even
Israel and the Palestinian
territories.
ISIS has origins in the
various different al-Qaeda-
affiliated Sunni jihadists
groups that have been active
in the region for most of the
past decade, including the
infamous al-Qaeda in Iraq,
led by former Jordanian-
born terrorist Abu Musab
al-Zarqawi, who was killed in
a U.S. airstrike in 2006 during
the Iraq War.
As the Syrian civil war
has dragged on since 2011,
ISIS and other al-Qaeda-
influenced jihadist have been
able to bolster themselves
through ransom, extortion,
and oil revenue, while simul-
taneously attracting fighters
from across the world.
Amid its swift victories in
large swaths of Iraq, ISIS has
also set its sights on nearby
Jordan, which is ruled by the
moderate pro-Western King
Abdullah. ISIS terrorists
consider Abdullah an enemy
of Islam and an infidel, and
have publicly called for his
execution. A recent video
posted by ISIS threatened
to "slaughter" the king and
called him a "tyrant."
"It is in the West's and
Israel's best interest to put a
stop to ISIS's advancement,"
