Colorado Indians, Jews share genetic marker (JTA)--Israeli geneticists have linked a NativeAmerican population in Colorado to Jews expelled from Spain during the Inquisition. Geneticists at the Sheba Medical Center in Tel Aviv discovered the genetic muta- tion marker BRCA1 in a group of Mexican Indians who had emigrated from Mexico to the United States over the past 200 years and settled in Colorado, Haaretz reported May 30. BRCA1 is found in Jews of Ashkenazi origin and leads to a higher incidence of breast and ovarian cancer. Researchers say the muta- tion found in the Colorado Indians is identical to that of Ashkenazim, according to Haaretz, and dates to a period more than 600 years ago. Jews were expelled from Spain in the 15th century. Researchers say this offers genetic proof that some of the Jews expelled from Spain who reached South America intermarried with the in- digenous population, whose descendants later migrated to Mexico and then the United States, Haaretz reported. Colorado's Mexican Indians do not have any traditions that link them to Jews, ac- cording to Eitan Friedman, who headed the Sheba team. Spiegel: Israel equips German-built subs with nuclear-tipped missiles JERUSALEM (JTA)--Israel is equipping submarines built in Germany with nuclear- tipped cruise missiles, accord- ing to Der Spiegel magazine. The magazine also reported Sunday that the German government has known about Israel's nuclear weapons pro- gram for decades, despite its official denials. Last month, Israel received its fourth Dolphin-class submarine from Germany, which is slated to become operational in 2013. Germany largely has funded Israel's purchase of the submarines. According to Spiegel, Is- raeli Defense Minister Ehud Barak told the magazine that Germans should be "proud" that they have secured Israel's existence "for many years." The German government recently signed a contract for the delivery of an additional vessel, with one-third of the cost subsidized by Germany. The delivery of the sub has bden conditioned on Israel halting building in West Bank settlements and allowing the completion of a sewage treat- ment plant in Gaza partially financed by Germany. The Israel Defense Forces intelligence unit 8200 worked with the NSA to develop what Americans called "the bug," " according to the report. To do so, the teams built replicas of Iranian centrifuges using equipment that had been provided by Libya's Gadhafi regime when it revealed its nuclear program to interna- tional inspectors in 2003. After successful tests, "spies and unwitting ac- complices" with access to the Iranian plant at Natanz infected computers there with thumb drives, the newspaper reported.
