HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, MAY 11, 2012 PAGE £:. By Gloria Yousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 Anne Frank a Mormon?'';.. The following comes (in part) from The Huffington Post and The World Jewish Congress• This comes from The Huff- ington Post: "Anne Frank, the Jewish girl whose diary and death in a Nazi concentration camp made her a symbol of the Holocaust, was allegedly baptized posthumously just weeks ago by a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Anne Frank Latter-day Saints, according towhistleblower HELEN RADKEY, a former member of the church. The ritual was conducted in a Mormon temple in the Dominican Republic, according to Radkey, a Salt Lake City researcher who investigates such incidents, which violate a 2010 pact between the Mormon Church and Jewish leaders. Radkey said she discovered that Annelies Marie (Anne) Frank, who died at Bergen Belsen death camp in 1945 at age 15, was baptized by proxy just weeks ago. Mormons have submitted versions of her name at least a dozen times for proxy rites and carried out the ritual at least nine times from 1989 to 1999, according to Radkey. But Radkey says this is the first time in more than a decade that Frank's name has been discovered in a database that can be used both for genealogy and also to submit a deceased person's name to be considered for proxy baptism--a separate process, ac- cording to a spokesman for the church. (The database is only open to Mormons). A screen shot of the database sent by Radkey shows a page for Frank stating 'completed' next to categories labeled 'Baptism' and 'Confirmation,' with the date Feb. 18, 2012, and the name of the Santo Domingo Dominican Republic Temple." And the following comes from The World Jewish Congress: "The practice by Mormons of baptizing deceased Jews was supposed to have formally ceased in 1995 by agreement of the Mormon Church. Jews and other faiths had been appalled by the 'ghoulish' practice. It came to light recently that some zealous Mormons had resumed the baptism ritual in the belief of affording an afterlife for the dead, this time with high profile baptisms, including the parents of SIMON WIESENTHAL and ELI WIESEL. The Mormon Church has reportedly issued an apology to the families of the Holocaust Survivors." (And gets worse!): Mormon posthumous proxy baptisms for Holocaust victims or Jews who are not direct descendants of Mormons has contin- ued, despite church vows to stop such practices. Negotiations between Mormon and Jewish leaders led to a 1995 agreement for the church to stop the posthumous baptism of all Jews, except in the case of direct ancestors of Mormons, but some Mormons had failed to adhere to the agreement. Not only his parents, but the name of Nobel Peace Prize winner, Elie Wiesel was recently submitted to the restricted genealogy website as 'ready' for posthumous proxy baptism, though the church says the rite is reserved for the deceased and, of course, Elie Wiesel is alive. Wiesel was among a group of Jewish leaders who campaigned against the practice and prompted the 2010 pact by which the Mormon Church promises to at least prevent proxy baptism requests for Holocaust victims. Wiesel last week called on Republican presidential candidate and Mormon, MITT ROMNEY, a former Mormon bishop who has donated millions to the church, to speak out about the practice. The Romney campaign has refused to comment. Another "horror" story... But this one is really entertaining! I recently heard from NANCY LUDIN of The Jewish Pavilion about a really nice guy, PETER ZOLLMAN. I pass her email on to you: "When Peter Zollman of- feted to be a substitute Shab- bat leader for the Jewish Pavilion, he probably had no idea how big that job could be. Peter Zollman So far, he has lead numerous services at Life Care of Altamonte Springs, Horizon Bay on Lake Orienta, Consulate Health and Village on the Green. He leads a lovely service and a terrific discussion about the Torah portion. To make things extra special, he brings home-baked challah and desserts from his wife ELLEN who happens to be a terrific baker. You can imagine how ecstatic residents are to go from institutional food to home-baked delicacies. The Jewish Pavilion is very grateful for the time and talent he has devoted to the elders in long term care." And yet another mensch... Wouldn't you know... I get to write about another wonderful person thanks to Nancy Ludin. She recently sent me this email: "Special thanks to Cantor ALLANROBUCKofCongrega- tion Ohev Shalom for sharing his time, musical talent and love of Judaism with the resi- dents of Village on the Green in Longwood. Every month, he volunteers to lead services for the Jewish Pavilion. Cantor Alan Robuck of CantorRobuckexplainsthe COS Torah portion, recites the prayers and plays familiar melodies on the piano. Many participants sing their hearts out. This beautiful, independent living community has more than 50 Jews, some of whom are no longer well enough to travel to shul. Cantor Robuck's thoughtfulness and generosity helps keep the elders connected to the Jewish community." (I love writing about such good people. Keep those emails coming, Nancy.) One for the road... After Adam was created, there he was, all alone, in the Garden of Eden. Of course it wasn't good for him to be all by himself, so the Lord came down to visit. "Adam," He said, "I have a plan to make you much, much happier. I'm going to give you a companion, a help mate for you.., someone who will fulfill your every need and desire.., someone who will be faithful, loving and obedient.., someone who will make you feel wonderful every day of your life." Adam was stunned. "That's sounds incredible! .... Well, it is," replied the Lord. "But it doesn't come for free. This is someone so special that it's going to cost you an arm and a leg." "That's a pretty high price to pay," said Adam. "What can I get for a rib?" (See, Irv, I told you why I don't do windows!) To all my readers, "HAPPY MOTHER'S DAY!"
