Last year, the ionof y for En- given a vir- "Srulik", a Israeli cartoon guides the tour. are invited to learn languages, ge- CUrrency, and food. site opens with a animation of a plane flying from America to Israel. The land of Israel is seen from above. When the plane lands, Srulik is wel- comed by a banner and flow- ers. At the bottom of the main page there are navigational buttons, which lead to inter- esting sections of the children's site. Kids learn about currency by visiting a street scene with clickable objects. Each object displays a price in shekels so that visi- tors can see the relative value of shekels to dollars. Children are also told about the his- torical significance of the shekel and its references in the Bible. This is part of the "Symbols" section that also contains an audio of "Hatikvah," and information about the flag and national emblem. Here one also finds audio recording of Ben- Gurion's Declaration of Inde- pendence accompanied by an English translation. The "History" section is laid out like a giant game board. Kids are encouraged to click on various spaces on the board to learn about dif- ferent periods of Israeli his- tory. Each period is accom- panied by animations and description. The "Tour Israel" section starts off with an interactive map of the State of Israel. There are five major land- marks highlighted: The Dead Sea, Eilat, the Sea of Galilee, Tel Aviv, and Jerusalem. Clicking on any of these land- marks starts a brief animated illustration with a description of the area. The Jerusalem part of the tour is compre- hensive and extensive. It has descriptions of the holy places for Judaism, Christianity, and Islam. Alongwith the descrip- tions are photographs of each location. The site's use of colorful interactive media will cer- tainly entertain and educate young visitors. The informa- tion contained in each sec- tion should prove useful for older students doing research on the State of Israel. Al- though it is not meant to be a comprehensive research des- tination, it is a great place for students to start their studies of Israel. If you would like to visit Israel with your students or children, this site is a great place to start. You can find the Israeli Embassy children's page at: www.embassyofisrael.org/ kids/Enjoy your virtual tour, and have a virtual falafel on me.
