HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, MAY 5, 2017 PAGE 9A By Gloria Yousha--Call 407-657-9405 or Israel's story... I received a little booklet with that title from StandWi- thUs. You probably can order it and many other related ma- terials at www.standwithus. corn/store This is what it says: Over 3,000 years ago an indigenous people developed a thriving civilization and cul- ture in their homeland. Over time, they were conquered by a series of aggressive foreign empires. While some of the people stayed in their cities and communities, most of them gradually scattere d across the Middle East and Europe. For 1,900 years, they lived Theodor Herzl as an oppressed minority, suffering persecution, expulsions, and ultimately genocide. They barely survived but never lost hope. They overcame. They started a liberation movement and went back home to join those who were already there. They built one of the mostvibrant, diverse, inspiring nations the world has ever seen. That nation is Israel. Theodor Herzl, who formed the World Zionist Organiza- tion and promoted Jewish migration to Palestine in an effort to form a Jewish state, though he died long before its establish- ment, is generally considered a father of the State of Israel, formed in 1948. He said Israel's story is proof that "if you will it, it is no dream." Israel is the Jewish homeland for over 3,000 years. (My spouse and I visited there many years ago. And it is definitely on my bucket list to travel there again.) Remembering Jewish history... The date was April 1, 1933. A one-day boycott against Ger- many's Jews was the first nationwide act carried out by the Nazis after rising to power two months earlier. Groups of uniformed Nazis, some armed with rifles, stood outside of Jewish-owned businesses to prevent customers from entering. There were many cases of looting and some violence against Jewish storeowners. However, since the boycott only lasted one day, and took place on a Saturday when many Jew- ish storeowners were not open for business, its influence was relatively limited. The boycott was the first step in the process of destabilizing the economic foundations of German Jewry. A week after the boycott, the first national laws were passed against Jews, aimed at removing Jews from public service. (And so the brutality began.., and grew and grew.) I can't stand competition!... Here we go again! Beautiful women with great legs, pranc- ing about on stage, making me feel ugly and fat! On Sunday, May 21, starting at 2 p.m., the Dazzling Divas will present a "Spring Fling & Birthday Bash for KENNY LEE. It will be held at the Jewish Community Center, 851 N. Maitland Avenue, Maitland. The show will feature the talented Crystal, B J, Ramona, Kyla, Kenny Lee India, Alondra, Geraldine, Chantel and, of course, fabulous Kenny, who won't even tell me how old he will turn on his birthday! (Sure, I'm probably old enough to be his sister.., oh shut up!) Tickets are $20, which includes a buffet with the show. Advance reservations for groups of 6 or more is $15 each for buffet and show. Advanced RSVP is suggested. To RSVP or for directions, phone 407-670-4418. (The Dazzling Divas shows are always a highlight of my year, even though they are men dressed as women. They make me feel so inferior.) Mazel Toy Department... Grandma and grandpa, EDITH and CHARLES SCHULMAN of Casselberry, are so very proud (and rightly so) of their grandson, JORDAN SCHILIT. Jordan, the son of KEITH and KAREN SCHILIT, (a former runner in track and field) is now coach of field and track for the Girls Maccabi Team. (I don't even know Jordan and I'm proudt Incidentally, Edith was my wonderful and brilliant editor for many years at Heritage.) A reminder... On Sunday, May 7, at 2 p.m. sharp, the Congregation Ohev Shalom Seniors invites the entire community to attend "a surprise of your life, featuring Sammy and Justin." (That's all I know to report to you at this time because Berny Raffwon't tell us any more.) The cost is $5, COS Senior members; $8, all others. Refreshments will follow the performance. (They better have my cookies is all I can say!) Summer Sundays at the JCC pool... Begins Sunday, May 7, from 11 a.m.-l:30 p.m. According to MARNI S.
