HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, APRIL 24, 2009 PAGE 9A By Gloria Yousha--Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 My view of pirates until now, that is... My thoughts about pirates were like the movies. You know what I mean.., patch over one eye, some gold teeth, black three cornered hat, ruffled shirt, pantaloons, parrot on shoulder, "Argh!" etc. In truth, the pirates that have been taking hostages off the Somalia coast and receiving ransom for the release of ships and hostages, are nothing like that. They are terrorists! Plain and simple! This was taken from the internet: The U.S. and its allies battled Somalia's pirates on two fronts last week, with French forces seizing a bandit mother ship and Washington seeking to keep the marauders from their spoils. Another U.S. freighter headed to port with armed sailors aboard after pirates damaged it with gunshots and grenades. One pirate issued a new threat to "slaughter" Americans, and last week's assault on a second U.S. cargo ship, the Liberty Sun, underscored the outlaws' ability to act with impunity despite international naval operations against them and mounting concern worldwide over how to end the escalating attacks off the Horn of Africa. Pirates bombarded the U.S.-flagged Liberty Sun with automatic weapons fire and rocket-propelled grenades, but its American crew of about 20 successfully blockaded themselves in the engine room and warded off the attack with evasive maneuvers. (One of the crew even e-mailed his mom about the attack while it was happening. I'm sure she felt sick and helpless as any room would.) The ship, carrying food aid for hungry Africans... including Somalis, was damaged "pretty badly" on its bridge, a U.S. official said on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak on the record about the ship. Windows were blown out and the crew had to put out a small fire, the official said, but they were still able to navigate. By the time the USS Bainbridge arrived five hours later, the pirates were gone. Meanwhile, French naval forces launched an early-morn- ing attack on a suspected pirate "mother ship" 550 miles east of Mombasa and seized 11 men, thwarting an attack on the Liberian cargo ship Safmarine Asia, the French Defense Ministry said. No one was injured. The ministry said the vessel was a larger ship that pirates use to allow their tiny skiffs to operate hundreds of miles off the coast. French Foreign Ministry spokesman Christophe Prazuck said a French helicopter in the area heard a distress call from the Safmarine Asia. He described the seized ship as a small, noncommercial vessel carrying fuel, water and food supplies. The 11 pirates, believed to be Somalis, were being held on the Nivose, a French frigate among the international fleet trying to protect shipping in the Gulf of Aden. (Of course I am proud of our military.., especially the United States Navy! And I hope our homeland security officials look into the mysterious disappearance of several young Somali men in the Central U.S. Could they be train- ing to cause terror here? Please check it out!) You know I need a laugh... This is an oldy but goody: After Adam was created, there he was, all alone, in the Garden of Eden. Of course it wasn't good for him to be all by himself, so the Lord came down to visit. "Adam," He said, "I have a plan to make you much, much happier. I'm going to give you a companion, a help mate for you--someone who will fulfill your every need and desire. Someone who will be faithful, loving and obedient. Someone who will make you feel wonderful every day of your life." Adam was stunned. "That's sounds incredible!" "Well, it is," replied the Lord,. "but it doesn't come for free. This is someone so special that it's going to cost you an arm and a leg." "That's a pretty high price to pay," said Adam. "What can I get for a rib?" You are invited to attend... This is such a special program I wanted to make sure the readers know about it: It is a Holocaust Remembrance Program. This coming Sunday, April 26 at 6:30 p.m. at the Jenkins Auditorium, West Montrose and Seventh Street, Cler- mont, there will be a Yore HaShoah presentation. The program is sponsored by the Summit Greens Jew- ish Friendship Club and Con- gregation Sinai of Clermont. The speaker is HOWARD REICH, a prominent author and journalist for the Chica- go Tribune newspaper, where he is a jazz critic. He is also a correspondent for Downbeat Magazine and the co-author Howard Reich with WILLIAM GAINES, of the critically acclaimed biography, "Jelly's Blues: The life, and redemption of Jelly Roll Morton." The story that is being told in the book, "The First and Final Nightmare of Sonia Reich," and the movie, "Prisoner of Her Past," is about a woman, Sonia Reich, the mother of Howard Reich, her childhood in Dubno, Poland, running and hiding from the Nazis and her present home in Skokie, Ill. Sonia's late onset of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder adds to the hidden drama of this moving Holocaust story. The movie version of the book will be released shortly, and the trailer will be shown. Join the Jewish Friendship Club and Congregation Sinai of Clermont for a spectacular tribute to all those lives lost but never forgotten. Tickets will be sold for $10 per adult and $5 for students. Please contact Roz Haskelson at 352-241-6664 or Sheila Whitman at 352- 989-1729 for questions and tickets. To hear Howard Reich speak on this program is too im- portant to miss. Be there! Howard is the winner of many awards. He lives in sub- urban Chicago. It's that time again... Want to feel like a kid again no matter your age? I do every time I attend the Central Florida Fair. Just the smell of food being prepared, the rides, the shows, the lights and the crowds in a happy mood bring me back to my childhood in New York City. Such a happy time! Sooooooooo long ago! (Don't ask me how long ago!) You have two more days to catch this bit of nostalgia on West Colonial Drive, Orlando. Please do yourself a favor and attend! (If you see me there do not spoil my childhood memories. Call me "Glo" or "beauty." Yes. I used to be a great beauty. Now my husband calls me a large beauty.) And speaking of the Holocaust: A German comes to London and stays with Maurice and his family. The first morning they all have breakfast together and have bagels. The German exclaims, "Wow! We don't have bagels like this in Germany!" To which Maurice stands up and yells, "And whose fault is that?" EWISH NEWS can be purchased at the following locations: Orange County JCC, 851 N.
