HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, APRIL 20, 2012 ~GE 9A __~ FLORIDA EWISH NEW~ By Gloria Yousha--Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 Irving Jacobson and daughter, Joy Winter Don't take it from me... Ask anybody (over 50) and they will agree that the music of the Great American Songbook beats the rap (and crap) of today! True, I am a professional singer of jazz and also true, my NYC cabaret show is titled "Gershwin And All That Jazz," but I really believe that the songs written in the first half of the last century will live on forever. And many of the composers of those songs were Jewish! (Incidentally, I also write songs and am a member of ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers, which boasts as members George Gershwin, Ir- ving Berlin, Jerome Kern and Harold Arlen... all landsmen[) There will be a tribute to "Jews And Jazz" tomorrow evening, Saturday, April 21 at The Margeson Theater, 812 E. Rollins St., Orlando. A celebration of the Jewish contribution to the American musical, featuring Florida's premier entertainer (and a friend), MICHAEL ANDREW. Michael has performed for many years in NYC before moving to Central Florida. He is a great vocalist and leader of his own superb orchestra. Michael Andrew will be joined by two other wonderful musicians...pianist MICHAEL KRAMER and his son, bass- ist BEN KRAMER. (I've performed with Michael and Ben on many occasions, including NYC cabaret.) The "Jews And Jazz" performance runs approximately 120 minutes. Babysitting is available at the JCC in Maitland and also at the JCC in South Orlando. Phone 407-645-5933 or 407- 387-5330 for all information about this service and also about the wonderful program "Jews And Jazz." Feel like singing?... Everybody sing, all together now: "Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday to you, Happy Birthday dear Irving, Happy Birthday to you." Every birthday and half birthday, Irving's son-in-law, LON WINTER, writes his formal party invitations. How's this for one?: "As is customary once a year, nay, twice a year of late, we pay homage to the Leader of the Kingdom of Irving. To all those graced by his benevolence and keen wit, we invite you to join him in fine drink and sup on fragrant foods to celebrate his 102-year reign As is also customary, the golden elixir known as Chivas Regal is a welcomed gift for his highness Join us for an evening of merriment, song and a bit of foolishness, as we wish Papa Irving a very happy 102." (Yes, I said 102ndbirthday!) "Papa Irving" is known to all of us as IRVING JACOBSON, a handsome, stately man, who tells great jokes. He looks and acts much younger than his many years. On March 30, Irving's devoted daughter and son- in-law, JOY and Lon Winter, and many other members of his family, threw him a terrific birthday bash. Everyone gathered and had a great time, especially Irving! (See photo of Irving wearing his crown, with his daughter Joy). It was a party weekend at Lon and Joy Winter's home in Sanford. Friday evening started off the festivities with a 102nd birthday bash honoring Joy's dad, Irving. Jessica Stafford Family and friends gathered as they do each year to cel- ebrate with him. Irving's son, Dr RALPH JACOBSON, came up from Miami with his son, MI- CHAEL; daughter, LAURIE, and one of Irving's 11 great- grandchildren, ZACHARY; Irving's grandson, Dr. MARK LUGER, and another great grandson, JUSTIN, also came up from Miami. Lon and Joy's daughter, JES- SICA, and her husband, PETE STAFFORD, came in from Atlanta. Irving has lived with Lon and Joy for the past nine years and has been adopted "Papa." Alan Grayson by all of their friends as their It was a beautiful evening filled with laughter and story telling according to Joy. "We are already planning Daddy's 102"d-and-a-half party in the fall." And if that were not exciting enough... Saturday afternoon Joy hosted a baby shower at her home hon- oring her daughter, Jessica. Jessica and husband Pete are expecting their first child in late May. It's a boy... the first grandchild for Lon and Joy and the 12th great- grandchild for Irving. Friends and family gathered for the wonderful celebration. It was 30 years ago that we featured a photo of baby Jes- sica in this column. Of course, I was not much older than a baby myself! (Shut up!) Everybody's talking... It seems Florida has a law titled "Stand Your Ground." I never heard of it before this recent tragedy involving GEORGE ZIMMERMAN and the deceased, Trayvon Martin. Our own former Congressman (currently running for Congress again), ALAN GRAYSON, has heard about it, though, and was asked to comment on the case recently on MSNBC television's "The Ed Show." Those who saw the program learned that Alan has studied this case and has definite opinions about it. Alan, a member of our Jewish community, is thoughtful, intelligent and caring. I didn't get to watch the show, but I'm sure he gave much thought to his views before he spoke. (You can tell I'm an Alan Grayson fan!) Back to music... The musical "Mommy & Me" (with a Jewish twist) will be presented next on April 26 at Chai Preschool, 7472 Universal Blvd., Orlando. Classes are $10 each. An innovative program for infants and toddlers to ex- plore Jewish themes through music and rhythm is how it's described. You can make new friends as the event stimulates your children's cognitive abilities through a great musical jour- ney of song, dance and fun. It promises to be an exciting morning of bonding and quality time for mom and child! The program is led by CHANI, who is an experienced childcare provider for over 15 years. The suggested ages of the children are up to 3 years old. For more information and to RSVP, phone Chani at 407- 354-3660, ext. 108. (On the cover of the "Mommy & Me" postcard t received, there is a baby wearing a hoodie. Oy Vay!) One for the road... Rivkah, a very attractive and shapely 18 year old, is in the doctor's office waiting to see Dr. Myers. Her elderly bubbe is with her. When Rivkah's name is called, they go into the doctor's office "And how can I help you today, Rivkah?" asks Dr. Myers. "We've come in for an examination, doctor," she replies. "OK, Rivkah," says the now smiling Dr. Myers, "could you please go behind the curtain over there, take off your clothes and lay down on the bed. Then I'll be over to examine you." "Oh, no doctor," says Rivkah, "you've got it wrong. It's not me that needs to be examined. It's my bubbe here who does." The smile on the face of Dr. Myers dissolves as he says to the bubbe, "Oh OK then. Please come over here, stick out your tongue and say ahhhh."
