HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, APRIL 13, 2012 - PAGE 5A Tel Aviv webzine founder thanks OrkcLlo congregation By Yosef Haim Vuiilard Finding the right words to say thank you is never easy. One million readers, 7 million articles read, half a million comments, 50,000 hours--these numbers would not exist without you, the members of the Ohev Shalom Congregation. What are these numbers, what is the link behind you and these numbers? The link is your rabbi, Aaron D. Rubinger. I met him one day last December in Tel Aviv, coming back from a trip to Europe studying the situation of the Jews facing a growing anti-Semitism. [Rubinger is currently on sabbatical in Israel.] The numbers are the num- bers of readers, articles read, hours spent by the reader in Without you, this webzine, spreading the truth about Judaism in Europe, about Arabic hate toward Israel in the Middle East, would no longer exist. Jan. 13, right before Shab- bat, a major hacker's attack to that webzine started. It was not a sporadic Unprofessional attack as we deal with almost every day, but a real organized and huge attack using more By Val Demings Israel remains our most staunch ally in the Middle East as well as a home- land for the Jewish people across the globe. We must remain vigilant in ensur- ing that Israel continues to have the right to defend its people and its borders while finding a lasting peace for the people of Israel and Palestine. Israel's security is es- sential for the future of the Jewish people and for the security of the United States as Israel serves as avital ally in a very volatile region. As a true friend and the only long-term democracy in the region, I am committed-to protecting and fostering our critical alliance with Israel. As a member of Congress, I will not waver in my com- mitment to protect Israel and give it the foreign aid than 100 million slave com- puters during almost 10 days, multiple servers in China, Russia and the United States; an attack similar to the ones performed usually toward states or institutions, in order to keep us silent. We knew that the enemies of the Jews did not like us, that each article was like a thorn in their feet, but we did not realize that we were worth such an attack. When we realized how strong the attack was--and that we may not survive it--we turned toward the chief of security Of the Israeli Embassy in Paris who gave us a contact with a more efficient company specializing in counter-cyber terrorism. And we got an answer. In order to be back online we needed to put on the table more than $15. This amount only to be back online, in a. safe and highly protected server, without the cost of being hosted on a dedicated server. As a very small orga- nization with little revenues we thought it was the end of JSSNews. After Shaharit I told the situation to the chief rabbi of the Paris Great Synagogue, where I go when in Paris, and asked him for advice. He told me that only the American Jews could help us and asked me if I do nQt have any con- nections there. He also told me that on such a crisis I could break the Shabbat if needed to defend Israel or the reputa- tion of Israel, which is what he thinks JSSNews is doing. On my way back home after the Kiddush, I thought that maybe I could ask your rabbi if he knows any organization in the United State that could be able to help us financially. I wrote him right away without hoping a lot. In the evening, back from Maariv, I found a first answer from Rabbi Aaron asking for more details, and the next day I received an emaii saying that he may be able to help us to cover some of the expenses. In the same time the Israeli Ambassador to Paris informed, me that he convinced the security company, which is also sup- plying the embassy for online security, to reduce its prices. Today we are back online, stronger than ever. We re- ceived emails from readers living in more than 30 coun- tries. Many Muslims living in Arabic countries wrote us that it also is important for them that we spread the truth about the use of anti- Semitism in order to keep A lasting peace and resources it needs to de- stability. We had a 10t of Christians who told us that after getting rid of the Jews,. the radical Islamists will turn toward them. We. had so many people writing to support us that we were unable to answer them individually. During the time wewere offline, our Facebook page, the only remaining link with our readers, had more than 30,000 visits every day and the number of members skyrocketed from 600 to al- most 5,000 in a week. Today, thanks to you, we are back. You do not know us, you can probably not even read us as 95 percent of our posts are in French, but you helped us without asking anything back. We do not know you, but you are certainly a fantastic community in Florida. I hope that this encounter will be the starting point of a long lasting relationship. You have a great rabbi; he is doing a great report about the reality of anti-Semitism in Europe. In 48 hours we will be at almost the end of the first seder of Pesach. I will be in my community in Berlin and, as every year, our rabbi, the Rav Ehrenberg, chief rabbi of Berlin, will remind us that can only be assured by a mutually agreed upon peace agreement between Israel and legitimate Palestinians officials. Any lasting solu- tion to the conflict must. preserve Israel's Jewish character and its ability to defend its surrounding borders, as well as a demili- tarized Palestinian state. While this region has been extremely volatile and chaotic for years, we can achieve a long-term, lasting peace where a Jewish Israel and a democratic Palestin- Jan state can co-exist. It isn't just something we should hope and pray for year after year, but some- thing we must strive to achieve. Val Demings retired in June as the first female chief of police of OrPando and is now running for Congress in FL-IO against Congress- man Dan Webster. Inspirational seniors Is there an inspirational senior citizen in your life? Someone whose life story influenced you to accomplish something you never thought you cold do. Someone whose encouragement got you over a hurdle that was in your way. Someone you admired and who made you a better person. Heritage Florida Jewish News would like to share those stories in its Savvy Seniors edition May 4. The deadline for the tributes is April 25. Please write Savvy Seniors in the subject field and keep the articles under 600 words. although the Jews had been freed from the Egyptian thousands of years ago, we, the Jews of Europe, are not free as long as we need to have police officers protect- ing our synagogues, schools and community buildings. And after the seder, at around 2 a.m., when leaving the synagogue, he will tell the police officers willing to escort him to his apart- ment, that he does not need them, that God is providirig him with a protection they could never give him. And while we will walk the half- mile to his apartment, in the deserted streets of Berlin, the city where it was decided to exterminate'us exactly 70 years ago, he may quote Rav Kook like last year, "The pure righteous do not complain of the dark, but increase the light; they do not complain of evil, but increase justice; they do not complain of. heresy, but increase faith; they do not complain of ignorance, but increase wisdom." See you next year in Jeru- salem. Hag Pesach Kasher ve Sameah! . Yosef Haim Vuillard is co-owner and founder of in Tel Aviv. Or e-mail to City of Lake Mary should cut ties with 'hate organization' Dear editor: After the headlines inter- nationally that have hurt the region, it is appalling that the City of Lake Mary and its Historical Society would sponsor an event featuring a Nazi "reenactment." I use the term "reenactment" loosely because just like some South- ern sympathizing organiza- tions, this group, Pala 130, thinks the war is still raging. They also operate the Mobile WW2 Museum. They operate it as if it were a his- torical organization. After many interactions with this group, the Museum of Jewish Military History has branded them a hate organization. The Mobile WW2 Museum also takes monetary donations, and artifact donations yet they are not a nonprofit organiza- tion, and they do not have a professional on staff. They use a history revision- ist approach to WW2 which is very troubling. Like proper Nazis, they do not seem to deny the Holocaust, but do, however, celebrate it. We call on the City of Lake Mary to cut all ties with this organization and issue an apology to the Jewish com- munity for its actions. In light of recent events in the area this will only cause people to become more and more skeptical of a place that we thought was safe and could call home. The event, Honoring Our Military Past and Present, is scheduled for 10 a.m.-4 p.m., May 5 at the Lake Mary Museum, 158 N. Country Club Road, Lake Mary. Description: Living history, vehicle displays, weapons demonstrations, Yatta Conference reenact- ment, WW 2 battle. We urge people to call tl City of Lake Mary and let them know they will not tolerate Nazis in their backyard, es- pecially at an event sponsored by local government. Lake Mary's phone number is 407- 585-1400.
