Reks Se photo Diaspora Yeshiva Student Band Music That's Rockin' Avraham Rosenblum plays guitar and sings. Not yet 30, he has a full beard, wears a yarmulke, and tzitzes dangle from beneath his shirt. He is the leader of the Diaspora Yeshiva Band which twice a week gives rock concerts in a room adjacent to the burial place of King David on top of Mount Zion in Israel. The fivemernber band began its first American tour in i Februan} with a showcase performance at the national headquarters of the ADL in New York City. The tour will take the band to 21 cities across the U. S. through April, when the group will return to Israel. Up until ] 971, as Allen Rosenblum of Philadelphia, he was non-religious and playing gigs in the U.S. with Billy Monday; Don Preston; movie star Sylvester Stallone's brother, Frankie, and the famous rock group, "Chicago." He loved his music but felt that something was missing from his life. He went to Israel, drifted from a kibbutz to Eilat, finally arrived in Jerusalem, and, while praying at the Western Wall, his first venture into religion, met two young men who brought him to the Yeshiva just Religion outside the Old City walls on Mount Zion. He has been there ever since. Three years ago, with other Yeshiva students, he formed the band "to promote Torah values and hzvot through music." Their Saturday night concerts, Melave Malkas (celebrations to bid farewell to the Sabbath and welcome the coming week), are padded with Israelis and tourists of all ages. Some dap their hands in time with the beat, some sing, some swing out into circles (men separate from the women) and dance to such lively tunes as "HiRe Ma Tog. "' The songs -- done in country western and folk in addition to rock -- are in Hebrew and English, with a few in Yiddish. The original lyrics of one explain the Diaspora Yeshiva: "You search the truth. You cannot find it in schools. They teach you all the wisdom of a world gone mad with knowledge. So come home to the ancient teachings. Learn the ways of the Torah. Climb the holy mountain. And walk in the path of God." The Yeshiva itself has more than 100 students, mostly Americans who have found their Judaism after drifting like Rosenblum or experimenting with such thinos as radical politics, gurus, meditation and mantras It was formed in 1967 by Rabbi Mordechai Goldstein shortly after the Six Day War when many young people who had gone to Israel to help in the Jewish fight began to ask themselves what being Jewish really means. Rabbi Goldstein, who is bearded and wears a Ionq black frockcoat, fought with the Stern Group in the 1940s. A community as well as a school, Diaspora Yeshiva has about 40 married couples who have a total of 50 children. There are residential houses with two-room apartments for the married, separate dormitories for single men and women, a library which shares a wall with the room of the Last Supper, and dassrooms in the ancient buildings on the Mount. Some ddm that this pattern is used to indicate eternity. The reason for sb'essing eternity in the shape of the rnatzoh is that the salvation which the Aknighty provided for the Jews when they were redeemed from slavery is an eternal feature of the Almighty's concern and sawng grace. The Haggedah itself states, "In every generation they rise up to annihilate us but the Almighty saves us from their wicked intentions." There are some authorities who trace this custom back to the reference in the Bible which speaks of the matzos as "'Llgoth Matzos" (drcular cakes of matzoh). This indicates that the original matzos which our ancestors ate on their y out of Egypt were round (Exodus 12:39). Question: Why is it forbidden IDeaS matzoh on the day before Passover? Answer: A variety of reasons are offered for this practice. Some claim that matzoh is not eaten on the day before Passover so that the matzoh which is eaten at the seder is more desirable and relished with greater appetite. Others point to the Biblical commandment which reads "'In the evening you shall eat matzos" (Exodus ] 2:! 8) as an indication that one should wait until evening to eat them. Generally speaking, this situation is similar to the custom of not blowing the shofar on the day before Rosh I-lashanah. The reason for both restraints was that a distinc- tion was made between the practice of doing something which the Bible ordered and doing something on a voluntary basis or just to fulfill a custom. Eating matzoh through the year is purely voluntary; eating it at the Seder is a Biblical requirement. The shofar on Rosh I-lashanah is a based on Biblical tradition (e.g. Yom Truah) while blowing the shofar the month before the Rosh Hashanah holiday is merely a custom, Separating practice difference, customs ]0 ]0 Others Haman extermir e Passover.
