HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, MARCH 30, 2012 By Gloria Yousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 This is too important to ignore... Please read the email I received from Tracy Martin and Sybrina Fulton and go to the website to add your name: "Our son didn't deserve to die. Trayvon Martin was just 17 years old when he was shot and killed by George Zimmer- man. Trayvon wasn't doing anything besides walking home with a bag of Skittles and some iced tea in his hands. What makes Trayvon's death so much harder is knowing that the man who confessed to killing him, George Zimmer- man, still hasn't been charged for Trayvon's killing. TrayvonMartin "That's why we started a petition on calling for Zimmerman's prosecution and trial. We aren't looking for revenge, we're looking for justice, the same justice anyone would expect if their son were shot and killed for no reason. "Click here [] to join 700,000 people who have already signed our petition calling for justice for our son Trayvon. "No family should ever have to go'through this nightmare. The law should protect everyone, regardless of where they live, how much money they make, or what color their skin is. "With our petition at 700,000 signers so far, we've made important progress toward making some sense out of what happened. The Florida Department of Law Enforcement will investigate Trayvon's death, and so will the FBI and Depart- ment of Justice. But Trayvon's killer is still free. The surest path to justice runs through Sanford, Fla., and through the office of State's Attorney Norman Wolfinger, who is respon- sible for bringing charges against Zimmerman. With your help, we believe he'll have no choice but to give Trayvon and his killer their days in court. Please sign our petition calling on Florida authorities t'o prosecute our son's confessed killer. Thank you so much." (I am very passionate about this. One of my sons some- times takes a walk at night around the neighborhood. What if some hotshot neighborhood watch person felt he/she had the authority to kill him and then claim itwas in self defense? Neighborhood watch is not supposed to handle situations... just to report them to polic.) Before I forget... I promised to remind folks about the COS Seniors meeting • this Sunday at Congregation Ohev Shalom. So here goes: The next COS Seniors meeting takes place at 2 p.m. Sunday, April 1 in the COS Ballroom, 613 Concourse Parkway S. in Maitland. For directions, phone the synagogue at 407-298-4650. The featured performer for the afternoon is PENNY GOLD- STEIN D'AGOSTINO, a wonderful singer. Refreshments will be served following Penny's performance. For further information and the cost of the event, phone COS Seniors president BERNY RAFF at 407-657-8215. What a wonderful young lady!... She is bright, beautiful and smart. Such a great combination...and she is a member of our community which gives all of us a reason to feel pride!! I am referring to RACHEL SERENA LEVINE, 16, tb, e daughter of LAURIE and STEVEN LEVINE. (Check out her photo above, taken at "Asia Night" at the Center for International Studies at Dr. Phillips High School. Rachel is wearing a sari.) Along with Rachel's many accomplishments, she is a member and volunteer at Temple Shir Shalom. Two RachelLevine major awards came to my at- tention and I want to shine a spotlight on them: Rachel was recently notified that her sonnet was selected for publication in the high school National Poetry Quarterly, one of only 30 to appear in its Spring issue. Here it is: Xanadu The kiss of the sun as it touches skin. The whisper of the wind as it passes. The song of the birds telling where they've been. The flower's smell, as sweet as molasses. As the light shines on the foliage below, The ocean's fragrance intoxicates me. My thoughts travel to the things that I know, As I relish in all my sweet mem'ries. The place in my heart where my loved ones lie, In my mind where my memories may dance, I store the peaceful days as they fly by, And remember them quietly by chance. This only thing that will always ring true, The purest paradise, my Xanadu. And this letter (in part) came to Rachel's parents: "We are thrilled to inform you that Rachel Levine has been named a Discus Award winner for the 2011-2012 school year. Rachel was recognized by our judging panel of education professionals for her achievements in the areas of Academics Arts, and Community Service. As a 2011-2012 Discus Award winner, Rachel's profile will now be submitted to our scholarship judging panel for 2011- 2012 Discus Awards scholarship consideration. We currently award $20,000 in scholarships annually, one $2,000 scholarship every month of the academic year. If our judges select Rachel as a scholarship winner, she will be notified and subsequently featured on our scholarship winners page. Additionally, Rachel created a multimedia profile highlighting her accomplishments in the attributes she selected that can be viewed in our Winners Gallery or by clicking on the following link: We would like to give you the opportunity to help us shine a spotlight on Rachel's accomplishment." (We'are happy to shine that spotlight!) Roar... Need I say more? The fabulous Broadway hit, "The Lion King" is coming to Orlando! It will be performed at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre from April 17 through May 13. Experience the phenomenon of Disney's "The Lion King." Thrill to the pulsating rhythms of the African Pridelands and an unforgettable score including Elton John and Tim Rice's Oscar winning song "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and "Circle of Life." Let your imagination run wild at the Tony Award winning Broadway sensation that Newsweek magazine calls "A landmark event in entertainment." One hot summer's clay in Winter Park, Merv stepped out of his shower and said to his wife, Victoria, "It's just too hot to wear any clothes today, honey. What do you thine the neighbors would say if I mowed the lawn without anything on?" Charlotte replied, "That I married you for your money." (Don't get mad at me!
