When why he continued to Play, knowing it was fixed, he man, but it's game in town!" U.N. has certainly been friend of Israel. It has been Called the most anti-Semitic forum on earth. But Israel re- mains a member. And takes their grievances to the floor .and in the back channels. Why? mains the only game in But George W. Bush has de- cided that unless this forum does it his way, they are irrel- evant and notworthy of discus- sion. How will members act towards the U.S. when it comes to rebuilding Iraq? Will they go along with the President's rather naive vision of trans- forming the whole Middle East into one happy family of demo- cratic societies? Who knows? One thing for sure, George W. Bush did not excel at history when he attended Yale. It would appear from what he says and the way he and his triumvirate of Cheney, Rumsfeld and Wolfowitz ap- proach the world, that there is no grand vision. No overall macro plan for how the world should look post 9/11 and un- der the new realities of this new millennium. I happen to be singularly impressed with Prime Minis- ter Tony Blair. There is a man withvision. He articulateswell, passionately and definitively. He does not talk of any "axis of evil". He backs the President of the United States on the Iraq war and makes a better case than does George W. Bush. But he goes beyond that and states goals for all of the Middle East and Europe. And, he does not approach it in any Pollyanna way. He is a realist, a pragma- tist and I wish he could run for the Democratic Party's bid for the Presidency in 2004. A job calling for a lot of sacrifice, a lot of self-sacri- fice, calling for genuine con- cern about others and reso- lute action to give meaning to that concern. Jews said yes to the Torah, just as America is saying yes now, choosing to do a job no one else will do, a job that is hard, not easy, that is unpopu- lar, but one that is right. It is no coincidence that the public in only one country in the world, only one country, supports the U.S. war with Iraq. That country is Israel, the country of the Jews. It is the only country on earth where a majority of the population is with us. The chosen people, again choosing to do right. That's especially amazing when you see how other coun- tries are. Especially amazing when you consider that Israel is the most likely to be the target of Saddam's wrath. Es- pecially amazing when you consider that Israel would be willing to do more to help in the effort than any other coun- would gladly give flyover rights and basing rights and soldiers and intelligence and anything needed, and yet it is Israel alone that is asked to butt out, be quiet, stay away. But then what Israel gives the effort is perhaps most im- portant of all. Its echo. It ech- oes the values of the United States, echoes the goodness and godliness. It echoes the understanding of confronting evil early, echoes the knowl- edge of the cost of waiting. It echoes the belief in doingwhat is right, in putting God above self, in putting concern about others on the same level as concern about self. It echoes regard for human life, for hu- man dignity, for freedom and happiness. It stands with us, shoulder to shoulder, soul to soul, heart to heart. And that is the most precious support of all. Israel and America are the two beacons of light in this world. And as such, the two that recognize their responsi- bility to bring that light to every corner of the world. For just as the light has blessed America and Israel, so that light will bless others. May God bless America, may God bless Israel, may God bless the people of Iraq, may God bless all the people of the world, may God bless all the men and women of the armed forces as they go about their sacred task. all Call Jeff at FLORIDA EWISH NEWS 407-834-8787 Our populari is on the gracious retirement living I0 0 www.tremont,net Come take a tour and see for yourself.
