HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, MARCH 8, 2013 PAGE 9A By Gloria Yousha Never again? We can only hope... Anti-Semitism seems to be having a rapid growth through- out the world. "From France, Scandinavia, Hungary and elsewhere in Europe," according to the Simon Wiesenthal Center, "throughout the Middle East and even in the Americas, threatening and sometimes violent expressions of Jew-hatred and calls for the destruction of Israel have put many Jews potentially in harm's way." The Center bulletin continues: "There is a growing threat of Jew hatred from people and movements that wield real power. As memory of the Holocaust fades, age-old anti-Semitism has returned with a vengeance." (I believe I already wrote in this column about my experience with anti-Semitism when I was a child attending kindergarten in Brooklyn's tough Red Hook neighborhood. I was so fright- ened of the continued beatings I received from Jew haters that I decided to learn my "Hail Mary's" and pretend to be Catholic. Later on, learning of the Holocaust, I felt guilty and I suppressed that memory. When I gave birth to my eldest son, however, still under the anesthesia I said my "Hail Mary's" aloud and shocked my hospital bedmates who knew I was Jewish!) Actually, we must do more than hope. For instance, the Simon Wiesenthal Center is working to expand its global efforts to fight back against escalating anti-Israel campaigns and anti-Semitic rhetoric and violence... "twin threats that must be thwarted." Rabbi MARVIN HIER, dean and founder of the Center, asks that we check out their website or look for them on Facebook and Twitter. They have the experience, the clout and the expertise to stand with Jews everywhere and with Israel. They could also use our help. (Actually, we can do more than hope. We can donate! ) Photographs worldwide... The best photographer I know is GLENN LOSACK, M.D. Glenn, a psychiatrist, makes his home in the East Village of New York City, but travels to many countrieswith his camera. His photographs hang in many famous homes, including that ofYOKO ONO, and they are often featured in National Geographic, Popular and American Photo maga- zines. In fact, Glenn is proud to announce that his multi- awarded photo PRAGUEO9 Glenn Losack, MD "The Stroller" appears as lesson #103 (composition lesson) in the brand new book from Popular Photography, which just happens to have the largest circulation of any photographic magazine to date. The book titled "The Complete Photo Manual (Popular Photography): 300+ Skills and Tips for Making Great Pictures," (paperback) can be found on Besides his world renowned award winning photographic skills, Glenn is a singer, songwriter, composer, author, physi- cian and world traveler. His latest books are titled, "A Psychiatrist' View of Our World" and (for children) "Bearly Fit." In spite of all his interests, talents and pursuits, he still practices as a psychiatrist. You can find out all about Glenn, his books, his photos and his medical practice by visiting his website http://www. (I am very proud of Glenn... especially as his late grandfather, Jack, was my mom's brother.) A heart of gold... You know I am referring to the kindest, most generous lady in our Central the entire state of Florida...maybe in the entire country, HARRIETT LAKE! She does so much for so many. She is truly a blessing. On Sunday, March 24, Har- riett is sponsoring "A Spoon- ful Of Sugar," a high tea to benefit Kids Beating Cancer. The beautiful invitation says "Revisit a bygone era when women wore their fin- est hats, gloves and pearls to a classic afternoon affair. All Harriett Lake ages are invited to sip tea and indulge in a white glove service of savories and sweets while viewing a presentation of beautiful spring fashions for girls to women from Park Avenue's finest." I'm too young to remember such elegance and class. (Who said that? Shut up!) Besides...who has elegance and class? (Again, I say Shut Up!) The High Tea and Fashion Show will take place at the DoubleTree by Hilton, a downtown Orlando hotel, at 60 S. Ivanhoe Blvd. from 2-5 p.m. Harriett thanks you in advance for caring and says "Our Kids Beating Cancer mission is to increase access to treatment for Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 Central Florida children with cancer, leukemia and 72 other malignant and non-malignant life-threatening diseases who are in need of a bone marrow or stem-cell transplant. We provide funds for uninsured medical expenses, while provid- ing support for families as they face the challenging journey towards a cure. Our commitment is that no child will ever be denied treatment because of a lack of ability to pay. The Kids Beating Cancer Pediatric Transplant Center is the first and only pediatric marrow and stem-cell transplant center in Central Florida." For sponsorships and tickets call 407-894-2888 or go online to (I will write about this worthy event again as the date comes closer.) Passover approaches... Passover happens to be one of my favorite holidays...except when Irv wants to take sandwiches to work for lunch. (Then I have to soften the matzah, which is not an easy task!) On Sunday, March 17 from 10 a.m. until i p.m., you can learn why and what goes on a seder plate; you can ask more than just the four questions and learn about why certain customs exist; you can learn activities for preschool and elementary aged children; and you can purchase Passover books, gifts and other Judaica. Where, you ask? Congregation of Reform Judaism, 928 Malone Drive, Or- lando, is the place! Things you always wanted to know about Passover from "A to Z'man Cheiruteinu (time of our freedom) will be available. To learn more about this event, you can phone 407-645- 0444 or go online to Plan to attend. It sounds like a wonderful learning experi- ence for the entire family. Oy vay Department... If you are under 65 years old and not yet on Medicare and/ or other subsidies, you may want to get hold of the March 4 issue of Time magazine, the one with Bitter Pill on the cover. (If you are healthy and well, you may not be after reading it...unless you are heavily health-insured.) One for the road... After reading the Bitter Pill article in Time magazine, you may need a joke.., so here is one, compliments of my dear friend, PAMELA PORES: A clearly inebriated woman, stark naked, jumped into a taxi in New York City and laid down on the back seat. The cab driver, an old Jewish gentleman, opened his eyes wide and stared at the woman. He made no attempt to start the cab. The woman glared back at him and said, "What's wrong with you, honey? Haven't you ever seen a naked woman before?" The old Jewish driver answered, "Let me tell you sumsing, lady... I vasn't staring at you like you tink; det vould not be proper vair I come from." The drunk woman giggled and responded, "Well, if you're not staring at my body, sweetie, what are you doing then?" He paused a moment, then told her..."Vell, M'am, I am look- ing and I am looking, and I am tinking to myself, 'Vair in da hell is dis lady keeping de money to pay for dis ride?
