Jewish Answer to Billy Graham Jungreis to Present With 'JE,00,'Jffsh Soul on by "13nker Sale HERITAGE Staff "The Jewish Answer to Billy Graham... a remarkable Rebbetzin who brings home the American Jewish Youth from the cults," is the way Esther Jungreis is described by the New York Post and Maan'v, Israel's largest newspaper. And Esther Jungreis will visit Orlando to present "The Jewish Soul on Fire" as the second program of the Jewish Commun- ity Cultural Enrichment series, on Sun., Mar. 23, 8 p.m. at Congr. of Liberal Judaism. Called "the only charismatic Jewish Evangelist alive today," by her colleagues, Esther Jungreis set out on her mission to reawaken the "positive spark of the Jew's manifest destiny as a light unto the nations" after coming to the U.S. following the Holocaust. A survivor of Bergan-Belson concentration camp, and the only surviving granddaughter of the hundreds in the Jungreis family who perished (the number of Jungreis rabbis shrank from 87 to 6 bythe end of the war), Esther felt that the U.S. is suffering from a "holocaust of the spirit" and decided that her mission would be to counter such total assimilation. Her first "Jewish Rock and Soul Revival" filled Madison Square Garden in 1973 with an audience of Jewish "root- seekers," many of whom had never been in a synagogue. Thus was born Hineni, now an international revival movement with a School on the West Coast, and chapters in Miami, Johannesberg and Jerusalem. The largest Jewish youth movement in Australia is Hineni. Jungreis believes that many young people are totally indifferent to or isolated from Judaism as the result of breakdown of the family unit. Last week she and her colleague, Barbara Janov, were in Miami to "bring the positive work of Judaism" to as many Jewish youth members of cults, Divine Light Mission and the Mukdanantha sect, as possible. Esther never knocks anyone," according to Soviet Jewish Activist Goes on Trial March 11 incommunicado since his arrest last Aug. 13, the Na- tional Conference on Soviet Jewry reported today.
