ISRAELI SOCCER STAR Aui Cohen's first contact with a ball was a cold one, as he arrived at London's Heathrow airport for a tryout with the European champions, Liverpool. It was a snowball, shown crumbling in his hands. The 22.year.old defender was invited by the crack English club after reports of his abUity reached the team. If Cohen makes the grade, Liuerpool is expected to make a transfer fee offer of about 1,200,000 to Tel Adv NlaccabL RIDDLE: Whet costs less than a shampoo, cut end blow dry and doesn't expect a tip? Born and bred in Philadelphia, Grossman is the only Jewish player in the National Football League. A far cry from the halcyon days of Sid Luckrnan, Marshall Goldberg, Ron Mix, Benny Friedman, Harry Newman and numerous others. When asked the other day what a nice Jewish boy like he was doing in Miami, Grossman was caught off guard. He'd never given much thought to it. He did explain that as a performer on his high school wrestling team he was called "kid kike." Now that he's a member of the champion Steelers, he says "they just call me ' rabbi'." Grossman graduated from Temple University in 1974 where he entered as a Lotential basketball candidate. Of course, he switched over to football and didn't become a starter with the Steelers until the sixth game of the 1978 regular season. Playing in the Super Bowl last Januarywas not Grossman's first chance in that glorious game. Don't forget, he played in the 10th Super Bowl Game when Pittsburgh nipped Dallas 21-17, with Grossman catching a touchdown pass from Terry Bradshaw in the first quarter of the contest. He didn't start in that game, but made it to the opening line-up by Super Bowl time as Pittsburgh again clobbered the Dallas eleven by four points. Actually, at 6'I" and 200 pounds, Grossman is not too big for a tight end. He didn't have too many football offers waiting for him upon graduation from high school. Aside from Temple, only Xavier, a Jesuit school, recruited him. The reason he decided on Temple was that he didn't under- stand why Xavier recruited him in the first place. "Actually," he says, "I wasn't interested in Temple I wanted to get away from home. But Xavier was the only other school interested in me and they aren't exactly known for recruiting Jewish football players. Maybe they figured I was a prime prospect for conversion." 121 SeMces: CONGR. SeMces: CONGI Rbg aln, (3o5)! Seces: Ffi., i 8J.
