HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, MARCH 1, 2013 PAGE 9A By Gloria Yousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 What a great idea... The following comes directly from the January, 2013 issue of World Jewish Congress Digest with (asides by me): "The municipality of Jerusalem is currently training a select group of students from the fifth to seventh grades as future city guides. The training, titled "My Neighborhood," is educating the young students in ancient and more recent history. As guides, they would be equipped to share the newly gained knowledge with future tourists hungry for the capital city's true local flavors. (They should have this for most of Israel's historic cities.., and Masada.) The joint training effort is sponsored by city leaders and Yad Ben-Zvi, an organization promoting the study of Jewish communities and the land of Israel and Jerusalem. Mayor NIR BARKAT says the training includes all aspects of the city's history and development from the first and second temples through the Zionist movement and statehood." (Not only will Jerusalem gain many more guides, the young folks will gain a greater appreciation of the beloved land they inhabit.) A feel-good story... (And if I ever needed one, it's now.) This is about a wonderful lady named RUTH DARVIN. Ruth is president of Friends of the Jewish Pavilion and a very active volunteer with them for many years: Ruth Darvin has been visiting a man who has AI- zheimer's' Disease for about seven years. When she first met him he was in the early stages of the disease. They would have conversations L-R: Jewish Pavilion resi- about many different things, dent and Ruth Darvin As the years passed he became progressively worse until he only could speak gibberish. He constantly would clap his hands. She learned that she should mimic his words and motions, which she did. He liked to sit in the dining room where many people congregated. His caregivers liked to tell Ruth that he never spoke or smiled at all--until she would come. When she was there he smiled all the time and also spoke in a constant stream. Recently, when Ruth greeted him they had their usual conversation and continually clapped their hands. Then all of sudden he put four words together -"YOU ARE THE BEST." It was like his brain was struck by lightning for an instant, and he was able to clearly think as he did in the past. For the rest of her visit, he proceeded to say her first name over and over. When Ruth said goodbye, he waved to her with a big smile on his face. (This true story brought a tear to my eye.) The visits of volunteers of the Jewish Pavilion are so meaningful. They bringwarmth and happiness to so many elders. They share the holidays and Shabbat with them. They light up their lives. (Why not volunteer?) More news from Jewish Pavilion... Yes... volunteers of the Jewish Pavilion are meaningful. And, besides the satisfaction they get from the good they do, occasionally they are honored for their unselfish deeds. MARCIE KATZEN is one of those volunteers• She will be honored at the upcoming Jewish Pavilion Annual "Spring Into Fashion" at Bloomingdale's Orlando on March 7. Marcie has served as secretary of the Friends of the Jewish Pavilion Board for four years. Not only is she involved in many Pavilion events, she enlists her family to volunteer with the seniors as well. (Indeed, she deserves this honor!) For information on the event, contact WENDY LEVINE at 407-678-9363• Walk for a great cause... No... don't walk for me to lose weight, although I'm sure I should. Rather, this is a walk for Multiple Sclerosis, an inflammatory disease whose onset often occurs in young adults and is more common in women. Multiple Sclerosis (MS) affects the ability of nerve cells in the brain and spinal cord to communicate with each other effectively in many cases. The event titled "Mid Florida Walk MS, Orlando 2013" will take place from 8 a.m. until noon on Sunday, April 7 at Baldwin Park at Harbor Park, 4990 New Broad St., Orlando. Registration is required and will take place at 8 a.m. The walk kicks off at 9 a.m. You can register to walk as an individual, join a team or create a team. The cost is a $20 minimum donation per participant. For further information, contact GABY CASADO, 407- 478-8882, ext. 55127 or email her at You can also visit the website We will repeat this event information as the date gets closer. (I personally know some very special people in our com- munity who have this disease so I am planning to walk. Who knows? I may even lose weightl) Put a smile on your face... For sure! Every time I see a show featuring Mr. KENNY LEE, I smile, I laugh, I really enjoy! I believe you will too. On Sunday, March 3, at 2 p.m., the Congregation Ohev Shalom Seniors will hold their monthly meeting. Take note that the venue will be different. This time we are to gather at the Jewish Academy of Orlando in the Multipur- pose Room, 851 N. Maitland Ave., Maitland. The phone Mr. KennyLee number is 407-647-0713 if you need directions. The show will feature Mr. Kenny Lee who has been per- forming and putting a smile on his fans faces for the past 30 years. (Since I was 3). He has appeared from Las Vegas to England and everywhere in-between and five years ago he put together his "Dazzling Divas" production company. He and his six member "chorus line" have been putting on their fun filled shows here in Central Florida and in many other parts of the state. Kenny loves becoming Liza with a Z (Minnelli) Refreshments will follow the show. The cost is still only $5, members; $8, all others. Any questions can be answered by BERNY RAFF at 407-767-6763. Kenny's shows are always great. He and his "girls" wear fabulous costumes and they have great legs! (I may not let Irv attend.) On a more serious note... On the same night, Sunday, March 3, at 5 p.m. (after Kenny's performance ends) Chabad Lubavitch of North Orlando pres- ents a fascinating evening with Rabbi DAVID NESENOFF. Rabbi Nesenoff is a blogger, a filmmaker, a songwriter and whistleblower whose interview of Helen Thomas, a White House press correspondent for many years, forced her to resign. She said (and I quote) about the Jewish people, "Tell them to get the hell out of Palestine." He will be speaking at the Westin Lake Mary, 2974 In- ternational Parkway, Lake Mary. The fee is $12 at the door. For further information or how to become a sponsor, phone 407-878-3011 or email to Want to feel like a kid again?... Well, you could hang out with me... or... you can visit the Central Florida Fair. The Fair opened on Feb. 28 and will run through March 10. They even have a "Give back, Get back" coupon on its website--Make a Wish, Feeding Children Everywhere, the Mustard Seed, A Gift for Teach- ing, Base Camp for Children's Cancer! The Central Florida Fair is giving back to them while we save money! Download a $3 off coupon or pick one up at Walgreen's Drugstores throughout the community to save $3 off the regular gate adult admission. The fair will donate $1 of each coupon redeemed on the specific day to the sponsored charity that day. For more information, go online to www. or phone 407-295-3247. There will also be free concerts with national artists performing. One for the road... This was sent to me by MYRON BLATTNER: Two little kids are in a hospital, lying on stretchers next to each other, outside the operating room. The first kid leans over and asks, "What are you in here for?" The second kid says, "I'm in here to get my tonsils out, and I'm a little nervous." The first kid says, "You've got nothing to worry about. I had that done when I was 4. They put you to sleep, and when you wake up they give you lots of Jell-O and ice cream. It's a breeze!" The second kid then asks, "What are you here for?" The first kid says, "A circumcision." The second kid says, "Whoa! I had that done when I was born. I couldn't walk for a year!"
