If in- stalling two sinks is not an option, make sure the height of the fixtures is comfortable for both of you. Many manu- facturers now make sinks and toilets in various heights to meet the needs of different users. American Standard, for example, offers many sinks in their exclusive Right Height design. The sinks are a little taller, so bending over to brush your teeth or wash your face is more comfortable. Enhance the shower. Add a second showerhead opposite the original to transform a simple shower into a spa expe- rience. A second showerhead adds more rejuvenating steam WI up the wall against a coordi- nating background pattern. A large-print floral border, for example, adds pizzazz to an overall mini-print. Conversely, a simple scroll border can frame or highlight segments of a bolder print background. In each case, the border adds a distinctive stripe. In another form of "fram- ing," we mated two strips of a simple lattice pattern at the corners of this dining room. At the center of each wall, we filled the wall from floor to ceiling with an exuberant large-scale floral bouquet pat- tern. This technique also makes ceilings seem higher while accentuating the el- egance of the bouquets. Using a simpler pattern at the corners also eases installa- tion by not requiring intricate pattern-matching in hard-to- reach places. Easiest of all is the use of the elaborately adorned trompe I'oeil antique secre- tary, complete with lamp, quill pen, books and letters, pre- sented in Bordeaux Valley as a precut, ready-to-install mural. This turns an unused wall, at the top of a staircase or be- tween bedroom doors, for ex- ample, into a customized showcase of your own creativ- ity. When your own eyes and personal point of view browse and can keep you both warm in a shared shower. Add some luxuries to make sharing easier andmore com- fortable. Install a whirlpool tub that's big enough for both of you to enjoy, alone or to- gether. Add a built-in stereo with auto settings for both and separate CDs from your own private collections. Install a televisionwith picture-in-pic- ture so you can both keep an eye on your favorite programs while getting ready for the day. If space permits, include separate areas for privacy in a sharedbath. Separate rooms for the toilet or bidet provide privacy while allowing both to use the bathroom at the same time. Add a private steam room or sauna for absolute privacy and relaxation. Finally, make sure that both of your tastes are represented in the design and d cor of the room. a wallpaper collection like Bordeaux Valley, where pat- terns are arranged according to coordinating colors and styles, there is no end to the custom possibilities you will begin to see. For example, line the walls of a bookcase with a quiet print that matches the room's wallpaper in color and style, yet also adds contrast. Decoupage a door to visibly connect a theme from one room to another. Borders are the most versa- tile tool for giving rooms a unique finishing touch. They can be run above the base- board, at chair-rail height, along the top of the wall, around a door, and even along the edges of a ceiling. Never forget the ceiling. Decorators call it "the fifth wall," and, when it connects all the walls, either through a contrast of pattern or a con- tinuing match, it demon- strates to everyone that you carry your own decorating flair to every inch of your home.
