................ , _ .: _, HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, FEBRUARY 27, 2009 PAGE 11A By Gloria Yousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 Lauren ousha Just back from Chicago... Sure. itwas cold...but not as cold as it was two weeks ago when the temperatures were in the single digits. We experienced mostly 30- 32 degree weather and some snow. which I foundvery excit- ing. (As long as there wasn't ice patches to slip on.) The natives called it abso- lutely balmy, especially when the sun came out for brief periods. We visited with our grand- daughter, LAUREN, age 9, and our grandson, ZACHY, who turned 6 on Valentine's Day and their morn and dad. We went to museums, Ex- ploratorium's, swimming lessons, geometry at Northwestern University, etc. We also hit the library and had fun with the furry members of the family, Tori and Allegra. Lauren. as well as being a chess champ, a soccer player and pianist, made the YMCA swim team. Zachy also plays piano and soccer and is quite an artist in spite of his tender ag e . We are very proud of them. We are also very proud of our new president... Butwe don't envy the work he has ahead of him. President BARACK OBAMA took his first foreign trip last Thursday. He went to our ally and border partner, Canada. And though he enjoys n 81 percent approval rating north of the border, Obama is Zachy Yousha expected to tackle several ex- plosive issues with America's largest trading partner. The war in Afghanistan: Canada has about 2,800 troops in Afghanistan, but Parliament has voted to pull them out by 2011. At the same time. Obama has ap- proved a significant increase in U.S. troops in Afghanistan, bringing the total there to 55.000. Obama said he will take up the issue of Canada's troop withdrawal with Prime Minister Stephen Harper when the two meet in Ottawa. (By now you should know of the results of that meeting as I write far in advance of publication.) What's that he said?... I'm talking about our new Attorney General. According to CNN's CAMPBELL BROWN. "On this program, we are all about cutting through the bull:' Last Wednesday, Attorney General ERIC HOLDERwent well beyond paying lip service to the nation's annual observance of February as Black History Month. It would have been easy for him to simply praise African-Americans whose sacrifice helped pave the way for our democracy; or to point to the triumph of both President Obama's election and Holder's own nomina- tion and confirmation as the first black attorney general in United States history. Instead. Holder used his speech at the Department of Justice to demand that Americans con- front our unfinished business on the uncomfortable subject of race. Attorney General Eric Holder said, "Though this nation has proudly thought Eric Holder of itself as an ethnic melting pot. in things racial we have always been and continue to be, in too many ways, essentially a nation of cowards." (i'm color blind and resent the remhrk.) You guessed it... I need a joke: Joshua has been making his name as a designer of smart handbags, but even he is now finding times difficult, and his business is beginning to struggle (as we all are in these bad.. economic times). Then one day he gets some good news and immediately phones his wife Rebecca. "Darling," he shouts down the phone, "I've done a brilliant deal. Marvin Levy, the Handbag King no less. has just told me that he loves our handbags so much that he will buy every handbag we can make for him. I've invited him to have dinner with us tonight so that we can close the deal. What do you think about that?" "Mazel tov. Joshua." replied Rebecca. "that's fantastic news. But how can we have Marvin here for dinner when we pawned our best dinner service last month? We don't have two match- ing plates to our name." "Don't worry," said Joshua. "I'm going to go to Abe the Pawnbroker right now. I know him well, and he'll let us have our dinner service back if I pay him immediately. Just give me the number of our ticket." "It's 946." replied Rebecca. So Joshua goes to Abe's shop and pays the bill for ticket 946. Abe gives him a receipt and goes into the storeroom to look for the item held against the ticket. He returns with a canteen of silver plated cutlery. "Abe. this isn't my item." says Joshua. "There's been a mistake." Abe goes back into the storeroom and returns a few minutes later. "I've found out what the problem is, Joshua," he says. "Rebecca had ticket 964. not 946. I gave ticket 946 to Marvin Levy." "Oy Vay[" said Joshua, "and to think I was planning to get rich by relying pn a pauper who has to pawn his property. And that loser thinks he's coming to my house for dinner tonight." (Not so funny, is it? Everyone is hurting in these times.) Musical theater will perk you up... The Senior Group of Congregation Ohev Shalom will hold a theater day on Sunday, March I at 2 p.m, No reservations are needed. It is still only $5 for COS eniors; $7.50 for all others...and that includes refreshments. (A bargain if I ever heard one!) The music of "My Fair Lady" will be featured. What a won- derful score! The Company Players will do a great job with this presenta- tion, I am certain. Everyone is welcome to attend. For questions and directions, call BERNY. RAFF at 407- 657-8215. The COS Social Hall will be magically transformed into jolly old. London with this musical production. Looking forward to seeing you there! Another musical presentation... Joey Dee's Rock and Roll Revue is coming to the Wayne Densch Performing Arts Center, Sanford. on March 7. If this is the music of your era you will be mesmerized by the vocals coming from the stage. Joey will be joined by DAVID BRIGATI and BOBBY VALLI (the younger brother of FRANKIE VALLI). For show time, prices and other information, call the Wayne Densch box office at 407-321-8111. Orlando gets good National touring shows... Thanks to SunTrust Broadway Across America-Orlando and the Florida Theatrical Association, we here in Central Florida are treated to the best of Broadway. On March 10 through March 15, "Legally Blonde The Musical" will be performed at the Bob Carr Performing Arts Centre, Orlando. If you loved the movie (as I did) you will definitely enjoy the show. According to Time magazine, it's "'an Elle of a show."- When sorority star Elle Woods, an underestimated blonde who doesn't take "no" for an answer, is dumped by her boyfriend for someone more "serious." she puts down the credit card, hits the books and sets out to go where no Delta Nu has gone before...Harvard Law School! This is a fabulous, fun musical that should not be missed! For tickets and other information, phone 407-423-9999, ext.17 or 800-950-4647. ext. 17 or go online to BroadwayAcros- One for the road... As a result of global warming, a new flood is being predicted by all the world's top scientists. They predict that it will be horrendous, wiping out maybe 70 percent of the world's popu- lation. Not only that, but the Flood could be here in three to four days time. (Oy vay iz meer!) Many famous people start to appear on television giving advice. One such program has the Pope, the Dalai Lama and the Chief Rabbi appearing together. The Pope says, "It's still not too late to accept Jesus as your Savior." The Dalai Lama says something similar. "I appeal to all of humanity to follow Buddhist teachings. If you do, you can find nirvana in the wake of the disaster." But the Chief Rabbi has a totally different kind of message. He looks -straight at the camera and says, "My people, we have just two or three days to learn how to live under water!"
