HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, FEBRUARY 24, 2012 By Gloria Yousha -- Call 407-657-9405 or 407-834-8787 Scary and true... Reading a letter to the editor in Heritage a couple of weeks ago, there was a commentary on a piece written by our own Rabbi RUBINGER of Congregation Ohev Shalom. It dealt with anti-Semitism in Europe. Unfortunately, anyone visiting Europe recently and in the past few years knows how anti-Semitism_thrives there. This piece was taken yesterday from the World Jewish Congress digest. It's just a small sample of what is happening: "The Jewish community in Sweden is asking why their government has appropriated more than $100,000 for the printing of anti-Israel booklets. Israel has also officially joined in questioning the booklet, titled Colonialism and Apartheid... the Israeli Occupation in Palestine which reportedly makes sweeping, propagandist allegations, using language accusing Israel of ethnic cleansing, apartheid, bombarding Palestinian civilian homes and enacting racist legislation and segregation. Swedish Jews say that the scurrilous 40-page booklet was government funded on the pretext of humanitarian aid to a Swedish-Palestinian solidarity faction. Urging the Swedish government to cut such funding are Israel's ambassador to the Scandinavian state, BENNY DAGAN, and the Sweden-Israel Friendship Association." And as if reading that wasn't disturbing enough, I also came across this article in the same digest: "Some 44 percent of the Italian population harbor some prejudice or have a hostile attitude toward Jews, summarizes a new report issued by a Committee for the Inquiry on Anti- Semitism of the Italian Chamber of Deputies. While only 12 percent of Italians are reported to be 'pure anti-Semites,' the shocking findings, according to committee chair FIAMMA NIRENSTEIN, are indicative of the prevalence of anti-Semitism in Italy and Europe The study identifies four levels of anti-Jewish feelings in Italy, ranging from 10 percent who feel no particular ill will towards Jews or Israel but hold some traditional stereotypes to those who out-rightly hate Jews. The 39 page report compiled over the course of two and a half years of intensive study and investigationwas judged by Dr. CHARLES SMALL, anAmerican expert on modern anti-Semitism, as an excellent document that examines the scourge of contemporary anti-Semitism in a comprehensive manner." (Unfortunately, at least in Italy, anti-Americanism seems to be in fashion too. While there my spouse and I found that many people thought highly of former Italian leader and Nazi collaborator, Benito Mussolini. And some of the Italian citizens even refused to acknowledge that American soldiers helped them fight against Germany That prompted us to ask: "Who's buried at Anzio?" Djh vu? YOU BET! We also must acknowledge that anti- Semitism is right here in the States... at least in Central Florida.) l-R: Anthony and Jennifer Ruben and State Senator, Andrew Gardiner and non-citizen, awoman, a liberal., can you imagine a Jewish woman? I am content to just visit the White House and point out the dust!) It's an honor... When someone is a kind, compassionate leader, that person deserves an honor... KAREN SELZNICK will be honored by the Jewish Pavilion for her leadership and compassion at a fashion show at Bloomingdales on Thursday, March 8 at 10:45 a.m. at the Mall at Millenia, level 2. Karen Selznick The festivities will include brunch, a spring fashion pre- sentation by Bloomindales style experts (check out what's hot), runway models from the Pavilion and goody bags for all guests. The cost is $25 per person. Ten percent of tracked sales will be donated to the Jewish Pavilion. A mimosa brunch and (as I said before) goody bags will be given to all who attend. You can honor Karen by becoming a couture patron ($50) and receive front row seats and be a part of a drawing for a beautiful designer handbag. For more information, call 407-678-9363 or visit www. jewishpavilion.org. (Be grateful it isn't me walking that runway. A "fash- ionista I'm not!)) Can you use a good massage?... (Believe me, if I walked the Bloomingdales runway, you would!) If and when you do need or want a good massage, I rec- ommend contacting certified clinical hypnotherapist and massage therapist, MICKEY MERCER. Mickey offers therapeutic massage therapy; hot stone massage; crystal therapy; aromatherapy and much more. She will even come to your place of employment (attention Heritage News) and do corporate chair massage and event massage. (I've heard that relaxed employees work much better!) She also offers gift certificates for her service. (Valentine's Day passed but my birthday is coming.) Mickey can be reached at 407-748-4742 or by email at Mickey@ChosenstoneTherapy.com. You can also visit her website at www.ChosenStone- Therapy.com. One for the road... This joke is an oldie but goodie! In 1936, Morris Rabinowitz fled his native Germany. He sold his assets and made five sets of solid gold teeth with his cash, well above the limit he could bring into the U.S. When he arrived in New York the customs official was perplexed as to why anybody would have five sets of gold teeth. So Morris explained: "Jews who keep kosher have two separate sets of dishes for meat products and dairy products. I am religious so I have separate sets of teeth. "The customs of- ficial shook his head and said, "Well that accounts for two sets of teeth. What about the other three? .... Very religious Jews use separate dishes for Passover, but I am so orthodox I have separate teeth for Passover meat and for Passover dairy food..." The customs official shook his head and said, "You must be a man of very strong faith to have separate teeth for meat and dairy products and likewise for Passover. That accounts for four sets of teeth What about the fifth set?" Morris looked around and spoke softly, "To tell you the truth," he said, "Once in a while I like a ham sandwich." What has become a "dirty word?"... "Politician," of course! But not if we have dedicated people like our own JENNIFER RUBEN in Congress. She is a little young now, but maybe someday we will be lucky enough to have the opportunity to vote for her! Jennifer Ruben, 16, daughter of PAMELA and ANTHONY RUBEN, is a junior at Florida Virtual School (FLVS) and lobbied on its behalf in Tallahassee on "FLVS Day" with her father, Anthony (Tony). Jenny is an FLVS ambassador, and she is a representative for Virtual School to the community and the legislature. This summer Jenny is taking her political interests on the road when she attends a week long media summit at George Mason University, just outside Washington D.C., where she will serve as a correspondent for the state of Florida. The 250 students will spend an afternoon with the White House Press Secretary, and each will have an opportunity to meet with the U.S. Congressperson from their district. Check out the photo (above). Here Jenny is pictured with her dad, Anthony Ruben, and Andrew Gardiner, senate ma- jority leader for the Florida Legislature. Gardiner welcomed her with a warm "JENNY!', after meeting with her last year. (I've been to the White House last year and will be going again this April. It is the "people's house," after all.., and since I don't think I will ever run for president since there is enough trouble with a Mormon, a possible Muslim (NOT) PAGE 9A can be purchased at the following locations: ORANGE COUNTY JCC, 851 N.
