HERITAGE FLORIDA JEWISH NEWS, JANUARY 31,2014 PAGE 9A By Gloria Yousha--Call 407-657-9405 or gloriayousha@gmail.com I may be mistaken, but... I don't think I'm mistaken when I say that many, if not most, medical breakthroughs in the last few hun- dred years were made by Jewish doctors and scientists. Here is another that I recently heard about. This comes from the American Associates of Ben-Gurion University of the Negev: "A cure for diabetes? No, not quite. But for children and adults with type I diabetes, researchers at Ben-Gurion Uni- versity of the Negev may have discovered the next best thing: a combination of drugs already in use for other conditions that reverses the disease and ends or lessens dependence on insulin. The results may be days and restful nights free of injections. In fact, in clinical trials, many people with diabetes treated with the drug combination within three to four months of their diagnosis no longer needed insulin at all. Even long-term patients were often able to get off night- time insulin. 'Some kids were four years old, and we also had a 30-year- old. The response was very positive, regardless of the age group, as long as it was really early after the diagnosis that the treatment was started,' says Ben Gurion University's lead researcher, Dr. ELI LEWIS. 'It's hard to reverse the disease after one or two years. But,' he adds, 'There was always a slight improvement.' The research has been so successful that some doctors in the United States and Israel are already using the drug," (I don't want to mention the name of the drug here. Consult your doctor. He/she can get more information about it by con- tacting Ben-Gurion University of the Negev regional director, DAPHNE NOILY at dnoily@aabgu.or or phone 415-927-2119. Also, this groundbreaking approach to the disease may soon pave the way for treatments of type 2 diabetes.., the kind that sets in during adulthood due to high-fat and high-sugar diets... as well as other autoimmune diseases. (It seems every third person I know has type 2 diabetes. How promising!) Attention all you talented, gifted people... Are there really THAT many talented gifted folks out there? Well, if you are one, and you enjoy expressing yourself through art, the Roth Jewish Community Center in Maitland has a wgnderful program for you. (Actually, they have many wonderful programs for you, but this one caught my eye because I am a frustrated artist): Afun and informal class that will cover the basic techniques, such as fiat wash, graded-wash, glazed wash, wet-on-wet and dry brush, will take place at the Roth JCC for six weeks starting on Feb. 6 through March 13 and again from April 7 through May 8. This six-week course always takes place on a Thursday and begins at 10 a.m. It is $120 for JCC members; $180 for others. As I already stated, there are many wonderful clubs and classes happening at the Roth JCC. Another one that caught my eye is called the Laughter Club. Led by certified laughter yoga leader, DANA KAPLAN, the Laughter Club is a fun new exercise to boost your happiness and well-being. (You can boost my happiness with a portion of delicious red velvet cake.) This class promises to bring joy and a social network into your life. It takes place on Mondays for 15 weeks. (There will be no class on Feb. 17 and other future dates). Classes start at 11:45 a.m. The cost is free for JCC members; $5 for others. But the most exciting class (at least to me) is Krav Maga, Israeli Self Defense. Students learn to defend against all varieties of attacks and are taught to counter in the quickest and most efficient way. Krav Maga promotes finishing a fight as quickly as possible. Attacks are aimed at the most vulnerable parts of the body. Classes are in session now but new ones start up in a couple of months. Scout Shabbat service Feb. 7 The Roth Jewish Commu- nity Center will host a Scout Shabbat on Friday, Feb. 7, 7 p.m. at the JCC. All Jewish scouts, families and friends of Scouting in Central Florida are invited to celebrate Lord Baden Powell's birthday. RSVP to info@childreno- fabrahamfoundation.com or call 407-682-2653 Small donations to The Children of Abraham Founda- tion are also accepted to help off-set refreshments after the service. The cost is $120 for JCC members; $136 for others. (Married 53 years, I know my spouse's most vulnerable part.., but I really don't have to fight back. I can always holler "ELDER ABUSE!") To find out more about these programs or any of the others offered, phone the Roth JCC at 407-645-5933. A truly historic event... Chabad of Greater Orlando and Chabad of North Orlando will present what they describe as "a Historic evening" with the step-sister of Anne Frank. EVA SCHLOSS, of the United Kingdom will speak at the Hilton Hotel, Altamonte Springs, 350 North Lake Blvd, Altamonte Springs, on Feb. 9. Eva was a childhood friend of Anne Frank and later on became related through marriage. The event begins at 7 p.m. with tickets costing $20 by today (January 31st) and $28 after. There are also sponsor tickets available. To purchase tickets or for more information, you can contact either Chabad Lubavitch of North Orlando at 407- 878-3011 or online at www.JewishNor thOrlando.com or you can contact Chabad of Greater Orlando at 407-644-2500 or online at www.ChabadOrlando.org. Attention music lovers... I know this is very far in advance of the event but I promise to remind you when it gets closer: The jazz programs at the Altamonte Chapel will have a new starting time beginning in February. No longer will they begin at noon, rather at 12:30 p.m. The programs will remain the same length, however... and of course, after the first set, professional musicians and singers are welcome to "sit-in." On Sunday, Feb. 23, starting at the new time of 12:30 p.m., emcee, our own talented ALAN ROCK, will present PAT GULLATTA, along with his swinging trombone and The Jazz Train, with MICHAL KRAMER on piano; BEN KRAMER on bass and GREG PARNELL on drums. (Jazz doesn't get any better than this, folks! I guarantee it!) For directions and further information, contact the Altamonte Chapel at 407-339-5208. Mazel toy department... Belated-congratulations to JOY GOFF MARCIL on her election to the Maitland City Council. Maitland City councilwoman, Joy, is a prominent lawyer... and a dedicatedwife to psychologist, Dr. RICH MARCIL and the loving mother of their son, RENE, 16, a 10th grader; and daughters, ABIGAIL, 13, an eighth grader; and ANNA, 10, in the fourth grade. Joy is busy and extremely successful in all the roles she plays.., wife, morn, councilwoman. (Joy is truly a joy!) As for Rich, he is a wonderful and dedicated husband and dad, psychologist, and also a gifted musician! I will write about the groups he performs with and the CDs they have cut, in a later column. One for the road... Here's one that TEDDY MEISTER told me: Adam and Eve were sitting in the Garden of Eden one afternoon. All of a sudden, Eve asked, "Is there any other woman in your life?" Adams reply? "There's no one else!" (I know.., a groaner.., but funny.) One more for the road... This one is from my "buddy," 80-year-old JOAN RIVERS. She says "I hate housework! You make the beds, you do the dishes, and six months later, you have to start all over again!" (Sure, I know... Another groaner.., and not even funny. I do the same thing in my house.)
