My father and Virginia got the tickets for the two of us, the kids would do something else, and we were going to make it a family week- end. Simple, right? No! In December Mitch announced that he had a wrestling tournament that weekend. He didn't want to spoil our trip, so he would just stay home alone. He'd feel ter- rible but he'd manage. Ter- rible? He couldn't wait for us to leave! Then we found out that January 12 was the opening day of soccer season but we didn't know game time. Jeff's time was announced. 9 a.rn. So far so good. Thursday, the 10th, Amy's time decided--4 p.m. in Tampa. Trouble! What to do? Solution. (30 to her game dressed for the show and leave straight from there. Friday. Buy a turkey roast for Mitch. The only bright spot? He scored a goal. Time to pack Jeff has his soccer ball and no clean underwear, he says he's ready. Amy drags out the steamer trunk, loaded with three pairs of jeans, two dress pants outfits, one skirt, and assorted blouses. "Amy, we're only going overnight." Nevermind. Throw all the junk in the car. Write a note with a list of "do:s" and "don'ts" for Mitch which he won't follow but he'll know we care. Leave food in plain sight. We leave for the game and with only a minimum of difficulty, we find the field. The game starts late. Why not? Amy does the same thing she did last year and the year before. She scores the first goal of the season for her team. Then another one. Her team wins and we're on our way. Late. It's 5:4.5 p.m. and really pouring. Tune in some other time to find out if a small family from the sleepy little village of Tarpon Spdngs can make it to lights in the big city... I found a delightful letter in my mailbox. Someone didn't forget: 646 Riverside Dr. Dear Mrs. Geier: Whom we call the Jewish Bombeck so you must know we enjoy read- ing your column very much. We also enjoy the recipes that you include and which bring back nos- talgic memories of many other items--crusty rye bread, bialeys, bagels and zemels (rolls). And which, alas, are just a memory today. Would any of your readers have a recipe for any of these items? My mouth waters with the memory of their taste. Thank you and your readers. Hopefully, R. Robbins, SL Pete For such a nice lady, rll get the ball rolling with a recipe I brought from Ohio. The rest, faithful readers, is up to you. A NI K E R !1!.
